MACD 4C
Mar 28, 2015

The MACD 4C indicator provides a visually enhanced perspective on momentum by applying a four-color gradient to the MACD histogram, allowing traders to distinguish between trend direction and momentum strength at a glance.
Usage
The MACD 4C can be used to identify trend exhaustion and potential reversals by observing both the position of the histogram relative to the zero line and the change in its slope.
- Positive Rising (Bright Green): Indicates bullish momentum is increasing while the MACD is above zero.
- Positive Falling (Dark Green): Indicates bullish momentum is waning or the market is retracing while remaining above zero.
- Negative Falling (Bright Red): Indicates bearish momentum is increasing while the MACD is below zero.
- Negative Rising (Dark Red): Indicates bearish momentum is waning or the market is recovering while remaining below zero.
Traders often look for the transition from bright colors to darker shades as a preliminary sign of a trend slowdown.
Details
This script calculates the standard Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) using the difference between a fast and a slow exponential moving average. Unlike traditional MACD displays that might only use two colors, this version evaluates the current MACD value against its previous value to determine if momentum is accelerating or decelerating. This logic is applied to a histogram plot to provide a clearer visual representation of the rate of change in price action.
Settings
- Fast moving average: Sets the period for the shorter-term exponential moving average (Default: 12).
- Slow moving average: Sets the period for the longer-term exponential moving average (Default: 26).
FAQ
How do I interpret the different colors?
The colors represent the relationship between the MACD value and zero (trend direction) and the current value versus the previous value (momentum slope). Bright colors represent accelerating momentum, while darker colors represent decelerating momentum.
Can I use this for crossover signals?
Yes, the indicator includes built-in alerts for when the MACD crosses above or below the zero line, which are common signals for trend changes.
