Multi Bollinger Heat Bands
Dec 17, 2015

The Multi Bollinger Heat Bands indicator provides a comprehensive visualization of price volatility by layering multiple standard deviation bands around a central moving average. This tool allows traders to identify varying levels of overbought or oversold conditions through a "heat map" style visual, making it easier to gauge price extremes and potential reversal zones.
Usage
The Multi Bollinger Heat Bands can be used to identify trend strength and potential exhaustion points. Traders typically observe how price interacts with the different layers:
- Trend Strength: Price remaining between the inner and middle bands often suggests a strong trending environment.
- Exhaustion Zones: When price reaches the outer "heat" bands (the outermost multipliers), it may indicate an overextended market condition, often preceding a mean reversion or consolidation.
- Mean Reversion: The central basis line serves as a dynamic equilibrium point where price often returns after hitting the outer bands.
Details
The indicator is constructed using a standard Simple Moving Average (SMA) as the basis and calculates standard deviation over a user-defined length. Unlike standard Bollinger Bands that use a single multiplier, this script calculates three distinct sets of bands:
- Inner Bands: Calculated using the Base Multiplier.
- Middle Bands: Calculated by adding the Multiplier Increment to the Base Multiplier.
- Outer Bands: Calculated by adding twice the Multiplier Increment to the Base Multiplier.
This layered approach creates shaded zones that represent increasing levels of statistical deviation from the mean, providing a more granular view of volatility than traditional dual-band systems.
Settings
- Length: The lookback period used for the SMA basis and the standard deviation calculation.
- Source: The price data point used for calculations (default is Close).
- Base Multiplier: The standard deviation multiplier for the innermost set of bands.
- Multiplier Increment: The value added to the base multiplier to create the subsequent middle and outer bands.
FAQ
How do I interpret the "heat" zones?
The darker or more outer zones represent higher standard deviations from the average price. Price reaching these areas indicates high volatility and potential price extremes.
Can I use this for scalping or swing trading?
Yes, by adjusting the Length and Multipliers, the indicator can be tuned for various timeframes. Shorter lengths are generally used for scalping, while longer lengths suit swing trading.
