ATR Volatility Bars 1.0
Jan 2, 2021

The ATR Volatility Bars 1.0 indicator identifies and highlights price bars with exceptional range relative to recent volatility, helping traders spot potential liquidation spikes or significant momentum shifts.
Usage
The tool is designed to highlight bars where the price range (high to low) significantly exceeds the Average True Range (ATR).
- Volatility Identification: When a bar's range exceeds the user-defined ATR percentage, the background is highlighted, and a label appears providing specific data: the total range, the percentage change of the bar, and the bar's size relative to the ATR.
- Trade Setups: The script includes visual markers for trade planning. A blue cross marks the bar's midpoint (entry), while green or red crosses represent calculated stop-loss and take-profit levels based on the user's risk/reward preferences.
- Directional Filtering: Users can toggle "Show Longs" or "Show Shorts" to filter for specific types of volatile moves, such as catching "flash crashes" or parabolic spikes.
Details
The indicator calculates volatility by comparing the current bar's range to a Simple Moving Average (SMA) of the True Range over a specified period. By default, it looks at the last 26 bars and flags any bar that is 300% or larger than the average. This method effectively filters out "noise" and focuses on price action that is statistically unusual, often associated with high-volume liquidations or news-driven events.
Settings
- Evaluation Periods: Sets the lookback window for the ATR calculation.
- Bar ATR Percentage: The threshold used to trigger an alert/highlight (e.g., 300 means the bar must be 3x the average volatility).
- Stop Buffer Percent: Determines the distance of the stop-loss cross from the bar's extreme, scaled by ATR.
- Reward Multiple: Sets the target level based on a multiple of the risk (distance between midpoint and stop).
- Show Longs? / Show Shorts?: Toggles the visibility and calculation of bullish or bearish volatile bars.
- Label Color: Customizes the color of the data labels appearing on the chart.
