The RSI VWAP v1 indicator is a volume-aware momentum tool that integrates Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) principles into the Relative Strength Index to better reflect market participation. It aims to provide a clearer trend bias and more responsive overbought/oversold context by smoothing the RSI with an adaptive "Rolling Line" that reacts to volume regimes.

Usage

The indicator can be used to identify trend direction, momentum exhaustion, and potential reversals through several visual cues:

  • Bias Detection: Use the 50 midline and the Rolling Line as trend filters. A bullish bias is indicated when the RSI is above 50 and the Rolling Line is rising; a bearish bias is indicated when the RSI is below 50 and the Rolling Line is falling.
  • Execution Triggers: Potential entries occur when the RSI crosses its Rolling Line in the direction of the current bias (e.g., crossing up while above 50).
  • Market Stretch: Use the bands (Static or Adaptive) to identify exhaustion. Highlights appear when the RSI or Rolling Line stretches beyond these bands, suggesting a move is overextended.
  • Divergences: The script automatically plots divergence lines based on RSI pivots. These serve as context for potential exhaustion but should be validated by price action or a subsequent Rolling Line cross.

Details

This tool improves upon the classic RSI by introducing a "VW-RSI" engine, which weights price moves by volume, ensuring that momentum calculations prioritize high-conviction participation. The central "Rolling Line" is a VWAP of the RSI itself.

A key feature is the Adaptive Behavior, which automatically adjusts the smoothing based on volume:

  • Low Volume: The script blends toward a faster VWAP calculation to prevent missing early trend shifts during thin trading.
  • Volume Spikes: The script blends toward a slower VWAP calculation to dampen "whipsaw" effects caused by a single heavy bar.

Settings

RSI Engine

  • Engine: Selection between VW-RSI (volume-weighted), Wilder (standard RMA), or Cutler (SMA).
  • RSI Length: The lookback period for the core RSI calculation.
  • Source: The price data used for calculation (default is Close).

Rolling Line & Adaptive

  • Rolling Line Length: The base VWAP length applied to the RSI.
  • Fast/Slow Length Factors: Multipliers that determine the range of the adaptive smoothing.
  • Speed-up on Low Volume: Enables the script to become more responsive when volume is below its average.
  • Dampen Spikes: Uses volume Z-scores to smooth out the curve during extreme activity.

Bands & Visuals

  • Mode: Toggle between Static 70/30 levels or Adaptive bands (Mean ± Standard Deviation).
  • Adaptive Lookback/k: Parameters for the volatility-adjusted bands.
  • Shading: Options to show/hide the cloud between the RSI and the Rolling Line.
  • Signal Gating: Allows users to ignore the first few bars of a session to avoid opening volatility.

FAQ

How do I use the RSI VWAP v1 for scalping?

For fast timeframes (1m-5m), it is recommended to use a shorter RSI length (9-12) and Rolling Line (12-18) with Adaptive behavior enabled to capture quick shifts in volume.

What is the difference between VW-RSI and Standard RSI?

While Standard RSI only considers price direction, VW-RSI incorporates volume into every up/down move, ensuring the momentum line accurately reflects where the most capital is flowing.
