Impulse MACD
Apr 29, 2015

The Impulse MACD indicator provides a modified trend-following momentum oscillator that filters out price fluctuations within a moving average range to reduce whipsaws during sideways market conditions. By calculating momentum based on price action relative to a high-low buffer, this tool helps traders identify stronger trend impulses and potential entry or exit points more clearly than a standard MACD.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used, examples should be provided in this section. This section also focuses on how main settings affect the indicator interpretation and output.
Traders can utilize the Impulse MACD in a similar fashion to the traditional MACD indicator, focusing on zero-line crossovers and signal line interactions.
- Trend Identification: When the Impulse MACD histogram is above the zero line and colored green/lime, it suggests a bullish impulse. Conversely, a red/orange histogram below the zero line suggests a bearish impulse.
- Signal Line Crossovers: A crossover where the Impulse MACD (histogram) moves above the signal line (red line) can indicate a potential long entry, while a cross below may indicate a short entry.
- Blue Histogram: This represents the difference between the Impulse MACD and its signal line. It helps visualize the acceleration or deceleration of momentum.
- Bar Coloring: If enabled, the price bars on the main chart will change color to match the Impulse MACD state, allowing for easier trend synchronization between the indicator and the price action.
Details
The Impulse MACD differs from the standard MACD by incorporating a filtered range. It calculates a smoothed moving average (SMMA) of the High and Low prices to create a "neutral zone."
The core calculation uses a Zero-Lag Exponential Moving Average (ZLEMA) of the source price (HLC3). If the ZLEMA value is higher than the SMMA of the Highs, the value is positive. If it is lower than the SMMA of the Lows, the value is negative. If the ZLEMA stays within the High-Low range, the Impulse MACD returns a value of zero, effectively filtering out minor price fluctuations that often lead to false signals in sideways markets.
Settings
- Length MA: Determines the period used for the SMMA (High/Low) and the ZLEMA calculations. Higher values result in a smoother, slower-reacting indicator.
- Length Signal: Sets the period for the Simple Moving Average (SMA) of the Impulse MACD, which forms the signal line.
- Enable bar colors: A toggle to apply the Impulse MACD color logic directly to the chart's price bars.
FAQ
How do I interpret the different colors on the Impulse MACD? The colors signify the position of the source price relative to the moving average range. Bright green indicates strong bullish momentum above the high range, while duller green suggests the price is within a bullish context but potentially weakening. Red indicates strong bearish momentum below the low range.
Can this indicator be used for scalping or long-term trading? Yes, by adjusting the "Length MA" setting, you can tune the sensitivity for different timeframes. Lower lengths are better suited for scalping, while higher lengths (like the default 34) are effective for swing trading and trend following.
