The Position Size Calculator indicator provides a streamlined tool for traders to determine exact trade sizes and risk-to-reward ratios based on custom account parameters and price levels.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used, particularly for planning trade execution and risk management. Users must input their specific trade parameters to see the visual representation and calculated data on the chart.

  • Risk Management: By entering the account balance and the desired risk percentage, the script calculates the exact position size required so that if the stop loss is triggered, only the specified percentage of the balance is lost.
  • Visual Trade Mapping: The tool plots entry, stop loss, and target price levels directly on the chart, creating a colored risk/reward box similar to native drawing tools. This allows for a quick visual assessment of the trade setup relative to current price action.
  • Label Customization: Users can toggle labels that display the specific point distance and percentage move for both the target and stop loss, as well as the final Risk/Reward (R/R) ratio.

Details

The script executes calculations based on the relationship between price distance and account equity. The core logic follows these mathematical principles:

  • Position Size: Calculated as (Account Balance * Risk %) / Stop Loss %. This ensures the monetary risk remains constant regardless of the volatility or distance of the stop loss.
  • Risk/Reward (R/R): Determined by the ratio of the Target Percentage / Stop Loss Percentage.
  • Stop Loss/Target Percentage: These are calculated relative to the entry price to normalize the risk across different asset classes.

The indicator uses label and plot functions to project the data forward on the time axis, ensuring that the information remains visible without obstructing historical candles.

Settings

  • Account Balance: The total equity in the base currency of the trading account.
  • Risk Percentage: The percentage of the account balance the trader is willing to lose on the trade.
  • Entry: The price level where the trade is initiated.
  • Stop Loss: The price level where the trade will be exited to limit losses.
  • Target Price: The price level where profits will be taken (required for R/R calculation).
  • Show Position Size Label: Toggles the visibility of the main statistics dashboard.
  • Position Size Label x-axis: Adjusts the horizontal offset of the statistics dashboard.
  • Show R/R box labels: Toggles the visibility of the price level labels (Target, Stop, and R/R).
  • R/R Label x-axis: Adjusts the horizontal offset of the price level labels.

FAQ

How do I calculate the position size for a short trade? The script calculates the absolute value of the position size based on the distance between the entry and stop loss. Ensure your entry and stop loss prices are entered correctly for the direction of the trade.

Why is the Target Price required? While the target price is not needed to calculate the position size, it is essential for the script to determine and display the Risk/Reward ratio and the potential profit percentage.

How can I access this tool? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
