The Bollinger Bands Fast Trend Indicator tool provides traders with an advanced method for trend detection and signal identification by analyzing the divergence between multiple Bollinger Band calculations. It aims to offer more precise entry and exit signals through a normalized trend value and a smoothing moving average.

Usage

The indicator can be used to identify trend direction and momentum shifts. Traders should monitor the interaction between the BBTrend (histogram) and its signal line (Moving Average).

  • Trend Identification: When the BBTrend value is above the zero line, the market is generally considered to be in an uptrend, whereas values below zero suggest a downtrend.
  • Signal Generation: Crossover and crossdown points are marked on the chart with green and red circles. A green circle appears when the BBTrend crosses above the Moving Average (potential bullish signal), and a red circle appears when it crosses below (potential bearish signal).
  • Trend Strength: The color-coded histogram indicates momentum. Brighter colors represent strengthening trends, while faded colors suggest weakening momentum or potential reversals.

Details

The script calculates two sets of Bollinger Bands: a "Short" band for fast reaction and a "Long" band for broader context. The core calculation determines the BBTrend by finding the difference between the absolute distances of the lower and upper bands, normalized by the short middle band. This resulting value is then expressed as a percentage.

To filter noise, a user-selectable Moving Average is applied to this BBTrend value. The combination of normalized divergence and smoothing helps traders visualize shifts in volatility and direction that might not be immediately apparent using standard Bollinger Bands alone.

Settings

  • Short BB Length: Adjusts the period for the short-term Bollinger Band calculation (default: 10).
  • Long BB Length: Adjusts the period for the long-term Bollinger Band calculation (default: 50).
  • Short Std Dev: Sets the standard deviation multiplier for the short band.
  • Long Std Dev: Sets the standard deviation multiplier for the long band.
  • Moving Average Type: Allows users to choose between various smoothing methods: SMA, EMA, LSMA, HMA, or WMA.
  • Moving Average Length: Sets the lookback period for the signal line applied to the BBTrend.

FAQ

How do I interpret the histogram colors?

Bright green indicates a positive trend that is increasing in strength, while light green indicates a positive trend that is weakening. Bright red indicates a negative trend that is increasing in strength, and light red indicates a negative trend that is weakening.

What are the circles on the chart?

The circles represent signals where the BBTrend line crosses its Moving Average. Green circles represent bullish crossovers, and red circles represent bearish crossunders.
