Self-Aware Trend System
Apr 8, 2026

The Self-Aware Trend System indicator is an adaptive trend-following tool that utilizes a 4-factor Trend Quality Index (TQI) to modulate band width and flip logic in real-time, optimizing performance for both trending and ranging markets. It dynamically adjusts trailing stops based on environmental quality, helping traders lock in profits during clean trends while avoiding whipsaws in noisy conditions.
Usage
The system identifies bullish and bearish trends using a color-coded line (Green for bullish, Red for bearish). Users should look for the following visual cues:
- Trend Line Transparency: A bright line indicates high TQI (high-quality trend), while a faded line suggests a low-quality trend or potential regime shift.
- Signals: "BUY" and "SELL" labels appear on confirmed trend flips, accompanied by a multi-factor confluence score (e.g., "85/102").
- Trade Planning: Upon a signal, the indicator automatically plots Entry, Stop Loss (SL), and three Take Profit (TP1, TP2, TP3) levels.
The Dashboard provides a real-time overview of:
- Current TQI: A value from 0 to 1 measuring trend quality.
- Regime Tracking: Categorizes the market as Trending, Mixed, or Choppy across Low, Normal, or High volatility.
- Performance Stats: Displays rolling win rate, average R-multiple, and drawdown based on a forward-looking signal buffer.
Details
The core of the system is the Trend Quality Index (TQI), which is calculated using four independent factors:
- Efficiency: Measures directional movement versus total price path.
- Volatility Regime: Utilizes Volume Z-score or ATR ratios to determine volatility levels.
- Structure: Analyzes price position relative to its recent high-low range.
- Momentum Persistence: Tracks the consistency of bar direction within a lookback window.
Adaptive Modulation Unlike a standard SuperTrend with a fixed multiplier, SATS uses a non-linear power curve to expand or contract bands. In high-quality trends, Asymmetric Bands tighten the trailing stop (active side) to protect gains while loosening the opposite side to prevent premature exits.
Character-Flip Detection This feature allows the trend to reverse if market quality collapses significantly, even if price has not yet breached the band. This acts as an early exit mechanism for exhausting trends.
Outcome Tracking The indicator tracks every signal's outcome, assuming a 1/3 position scale-out at each TP. It records "Realized R" to build a statistical profile of how the system performs under specific market regimes.
Settings
Main & Adaptive Engine
- Preset: Selects pre-configured settings for Scalping, Swing, Crypto, or Default modes.
- ATR Length: Sets the lookback period for Average True Range.
- Base Band Width: The primary multiplier for the trend bands.
- Quality Influence: Controls how strongly TQI affects band expansion and contraction.
Trend Quality Engine
- Quality Curve Power: Adjusts the non-linearity of band modulation.
- Asymmetric Bands: Enables independent multipliers for the active and passive sides of the trend.
- Character-Flip: Toggles the ability to flip trends based on TQI drops.
- Factor Weights: Allows users to customize the importance of Efficiency, Volatility, Structure, and Momentum in the TQI calculation.
Risk Management
- SL Buffer: Multiplier for ATR-based stop loss placement.
- TP Mode: Toggle between "Fixed" R-multiples or "Dynamic" targets that scale with TQI.
- Trade Timeout: Maximum bars a trade can remain active before being marked as a timeout in stats.
FAQ
How do the different colors on the dashboard affect my trading? The dashboard uses color intensity and regime labels to signal the reliability of a trend. High-quality (bright) trends are historically more reliable for trend-following strategies, while low-quality (faded) trends suggest caution or range-bound behavior.
What is the "Character-Flip" feature? The Character-Flip is an advanced exit logic that triggers a trend reversal if the internal quality of the market (TQI) drops below a specific threshold, even if the price hasn't touched the trend line yet.
