RSI Alligator Strategy
Nov 2, 2018

The RSI Alligator Strategy indicator is a momentum-based trend-following tool that applies the logic of Bill Williams' Alligator indicator to the Relative Strength Index (RSI). It aims to identify high-probability entries by analyzing the convergence and divergence of three RSI periods, serving as a filter for trend direction and strength.
Usage
The RSI Alligator Strategy is primarily used to detect and exploit market trends. By observing the crossovers between the different RSI periods, traders can identify potential entry and exit points.
- Trend Identification: The indicator uses three specific RSI periods (34, 13, and 5) to represent the "Jaw," "Lips," and "Teeth." When the faster RSI lines are above the slower ones, it suggests a bullish trend; conversely, when they are below, it suggests a bearish trend.
- Trade Entries: Long signals are generated when the Lips or Teeth cross over the Jaw while the other fast line remains above the Jaw. Short signals are generated when the Lips or Teeth cross under the Jaw while the other fast line remains below the Jaw.
- Timeframe Optimization: While the indicator can be used on various timeframes, performance is often smoothed on 4H to 12H charts. The 1D timeframe typically provides the most stable long-term signals.
- Exits: Beyond the built-in Take Profit and Stop Loss levels, traders can consider closing positions when the 5 and 13 RSI periods cross each other in the opposite direction of the trade, especially if paired with a reversal candle.
Details
The strategy adapts the classic "Alligator" moving average concept into the RSI domain. This implementation allows for the detection of momentum-based divergences that might not be visible on a standard price-based Alligator or a single-period RSI.
The three components are:
- Jaw (RSI 34): The slowest line, acting as the primary trend baseline.
- Lips (RSI 13): The intermediate line used for confirming trend shifts.
- Teeth (RSI 5): The fastest line, sensitive to immediate momentum changes and divergences.
Settings
Strategy Inputs
- Stop Loss %: Determines the percentage distance from the entry price to place the stop loss order.
- Take Profit %: Determines the percentage distance from the entry price to place the limit order for taking profits.
FAQ
How do I use the RSI Alligator Strategy?

Which timeframes work best for this strategy?
Testing suggests that the 4H to 12H timeframes offer a balance of frequency and reliability, while the 1D timeframe is preferred for identifying major trend shifts.
