The Supertrend Pullback Signals indicator is a trend-following tool designed to identify high-probability pullback entries within an established trend by combining Supertrend detection with volatility-based filters. It identifies structured retracements using a Dynamic Value Zone and a Pullback Quality Filter to ensure price action aligns with momentum before signaling a continuation.

Usage

The indicator is primarily used to find entry points after a market retracement during a strong trend. Users can look for the following:

  • Trend Identification: The script uses the Supertrend algorithm to define the current market bias.
  • Dynamic Value Zone (DVZ): A shaded area around the Supertrend line serves as a "value area." For a signal to trigger, price must enter this zone, indicating a sufficient pullback.
  • Pullback Quality Filter (PQF): This filter measures the depth of the retracement in terms of ATR. If the pullback is too shallow, it is ignored as noise; if it is too deep, it is ignored as a potential trend reversal.
  • Momentum Confirmation: A signal only appears if a candle closes in the direction of the trend after touching the DVZ, confirming that momentum is returning.

Details

The script operates through a multi-step validation process:

  1. Trend Detection: Determined by the Supertrend calculation (ATR and Factor).
  2. Extreme Tracking: The script tracks the highest high (in an uptrend) or lowest low (in a downtrend) of the current trend leg to calculate the relative pullback depth.
  3. PQF Calculation: Pullback depth is normalized by ATR, allowing the tool to adapt to different timeframes and volatility environments.
  4. Signal Logic: Signals are limited to one per trend leg to avoid over-trading during choppy retracements.

Settings

Supertrend Settings

  • ATR Length: Sets the lookback period for the Average True Range used in the Supertrend calculation.
  • Supertrend Factor: The multiplier applied to the ATR to determine the distance of the trend line from price.

Pullback Quality Filter (PQF)

  • Min Pullback (× ATR): The minimum depth price must retraced from the leg extreme to be considered a valid pullback.
  • Max Pullback (× ATR): The maximum allowable retracement; signals are filtered out if price retraces further than this value to avoid entering during reversals.

Dynamic Value Zone (DVZ)

  • Zone Half-Width (× ATR): Determines the thickness of the shaded zone around the Supertrend line.
  • Show Value Zone: Toggles the visibility of the entry zone on the chart.

Visual Appearance & Alerts

  • Show Supertrend Line: Toggles the main trend line.
  • Show Entry Signals: Enables or disables the labels for bullish and bearish continuation signals.
  • Alert Options: Includes toggles for signal alerts, trend flips, and price entering the Dynamic Value Zone.

FAQ

How do I access Supertrend Pullback Signals?

You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.

Why are some pullbacks not showing signals?

Signals are filtered by the Pullback Quality Filter (PQF). If a retracement is too shallow (less than the Min Pullback) or too deep (more than the Max Pullback), the script will not generate a signal to maintain quality.

Can I use this for counter-trend trading?

No, this indicator is specifically designed for trend continuation. It identifies areas where the existing trend is likely to resume after a temporary pause or retracement.
