Volatility Stop MTF
Jan 27, 2020

The Volatility Stop MTF indicator provides a multi-timeframe perspective on an ATR-based trend detection tool, primarily used for identifying stop-loss levels and trend direction. By calculating volatility stops on higher timeframes, the tool helps traders filter out noise and identify more significant market shifts.
Usage
The tool can be applied to detect trends and potential exits across different time horizons. Users can select the higher timeframe (HTF) through discrete steps (e.g., 1D, 1W), as a multiple of the current chart resolution (e.g., 3x), or as a fixed timeframe.
One of the core features is the Early Breach mode. When enabled, a stop is considered breached as soon as the current chart's price crosses the HTF stop level, even if the HTF trend has not officially reversed. This creates a "limbo" state, which can be identified via background highlighting or specific bar coloring, allowing for faster exits at the cost of potentially missing a portion of the subsequent trend.
Details
The indicator is based on Average True Range (ATR) calculations to determine trailing stop levels. The MTF version utilizes the request.security() function to fetch data from higher intervals. It includes a non-repainting mode by default, ensuring that signals are locked based on completed HTF bars. The implementation also features a "limbo" state logic, which tracks the period between a price breach on the lower timeframe and the actual trend reversal on the higher timeframe.
Settings
Stop calculations
- Source: The price source used for the ATR and stop calculations.
- Length: The period used for the ATR calculation.
- ATR factor: The multiplier applied to the ATR to determine the distance of the stop from the price.
HTF selection
- Higher-timeframe selection: Chooses how the HTF is determined (None, Discrete Steps, Multiple, or Fixed).
- Detect breaches by chart bars: Enables early exit signals when current price crosses the HTF stop.
- Repainting HTF: If enabled, the HTF line will update in real-time; if disabled, it will use confirmed historical data.
Visuals
- Color scheme: Selects between Standard and Alternate color palettes.
- Style: Choose to display the stop as a Line, Circles, Diamonds, or Arrows.
- Color bars on trend state: Colors the price bars based on whether the current trend is up or down.
FAQ
How do I use the Multiple of Current TF setting?
This setting allows you to set the HTF relative to your current chart. For example, if you are on a 1-hour chart and set the multiple to 4, the indicator will calculate the Volatility Stop based on a 4-hour timeframe.
What is the "Limbo" state?
The limbo state occurs in Early Breach mode when the price has crossed the HTF stop, but the higher timeframe bar has not yet closed to confirm a trend reversal. It is often a signal for an early exit.
