Smarter MACD
Apr 18, 2022

The Smarter MACD indicator provides an enhanced visualization of the Moving Average Convergence Divergence oscillator by incorporating historical average peak and dip levels to better identify overextended market conditions and potential trend reversals.
Usage
The tool is primarily used to identify momentum shifts and trend exhaustion. By analyzing the relationship between the MACD line, its signal, and the calculated historical averages, traders can spot high-probability entry and exit points.
- Histogram Analysis: The color-coded histogram indicates not only whether momentum is positive or negative but also whether it is increasing or decreasing relative to the previous bar.
- Average Ranges: The indicator plots average peak and dip lines calculated from the entire history of the signal's swings. These levels act as dynamic areas of interest; when the MACD signal reaches these levels, it may indicate an overbought or oversold state.
- Divergence Detection: The script automatically identifies and plots bullish and bearish divergence shapes and connecting lines when momentum shifts occur at higher lows or lower highs relative to historical peaks.
- Background Highlighting: The background changes color to provide a quick visual cue of the prevailing momentum trend based on the peak/dip logic.
Details
The Smarter MACD operates by calculating the standard difference between a fast and slow Exponential Moving Average (EMA). Unlike a standard MACD, it tracks the cumulative average of every local peak (above zero) and local dip (below zero) found at the points where the histogram crosses the zero line.
These averages provide a statistical "normal" range for the specific asset and timeframe being traded. The script also includes a multi-timeframe (MTF) functionality, allowing users to calculate the MACD values from a higher timeframe while viewing them on their current chart.
Settings
Color Settings
- Colors: Customizes the primary positive (bullish) and negative (bearish) colors used for the MACD lines, histogram, and shapes.
Timeframe Settings
- Timeframe: Allows the user to select a specific timeframe for the MACD calculation (e.g., viewing 1-hour MACD data on a 15-minute chart).
MACD Settings
- MACD Fast MA Length: Sets the period for the faster EMA (default is 8).
- MACD Slow MA Length: Sets the period for the slower EMA (default is 21).
- MACD Signal Length: Sets the smoothing period for the MACD Signal line (default is 5).
FAQ
How do I interpret the background colors?
The background highlights represent momentum regimes. A green tint suggests a bullish momentum structure based on rising peaks, while a red tint suggests a bearish structure based on falling dips.
What do the triangles on the signal line mean?
The triangles represent detected divergences. A triangle up indicates a bullish divergence (higher low in momentum), and a triangle down indicates a bearish divergence (lower high in momentum).
