Smart Trader, Episode 07, ICS Geometric Buyers/Sellers Pressure
May 8, 2026

The Smart Trader, Episode 07, ICS Geometric Buyers/Sellers Pressure indicator measures the real-time balance between buying and selling forces by calculating geometric areas within a normalized Isotropic Coordinate System (ICS). This tool allows traders to quantify market pressure as a dimensionless ratio between -1 and +1, making readings comparable across any instrument or timeframe without manual recalibration.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to interpret market dynamics through geometric pressure.
- Pressure Interpretation: The indicator outputs two percentage values: Red % (seller dominance) and Blue % (buyer dominance). When Red % is high, sellers occupy more geometric "room" relative to the range ceiling; when Blue % is high, buyers dominate the space near the range floor.
- Gradient Barometer: A vertical column displayed to the right of the price action provides an instant visual of the current balance. A larger red zone indicates structural selling pressure, while a larger blue zone indicates buying pressure.
- Prime Triangle Fan: The fan overlay maps pressure intensity across 25 different time horizons (based on prime numbers). Denser clusters of triangle edges often act as structural support or resistance zones.
- Regime Tracking: Traders can use the "Freeze" mechanism to observe how price behaves after breaking out of a established range. If the "child" pressure (B') shows a low opposing-force percentage, the breakout has strong structural conviction.
Details
The indicator utilizes a multi-step geometric and mathematical framework:
- Isotropic Coordinate System (ICS): To prevent chart zoom levels from distorting geometry, the script rescales the time and price axes using the Yang-Zhang (2000) composite volatility estimator. This ensures triangle areas represent pure structural ratios.
- Prime Number Offsets: Sampling is performed at 25 prime-numbered intervals (3, 5, 7... 101). This avoids "harmonic aliasing," ensuring the measurement isn't skewed by periodic market cycles or recurring time-based patterns.
- The B Metric: Using the Shoelace formula for polygon area, the script calculates an upper (seller) and lower (buyer) triangle. The ratio is processed through a symmetric formula: $B = (r1 - r2) / (r1 + r2)$, resulting in a value where 0 is perfect equilibrium.
- Freeze/Revival System: When a price close breaches the range, the current boundaries freeze. A secondary "child" channel tracks the breakout. The freeze only "revives" (resets) once the opposing pressure within the breakout zone reaches a specific threshold, signaling exhaustion.
Settings
Range Lines
- Lookback length: Sets the number of historical bars used to determine the high/low range boundaries.
- Line width: Adjusts the pixel thickness of the horizontal range lines.
- Display mode: Choose between "Live" (updates every tick) or "Closed" (updates only on bar close for stability).
ICS
- ICS Window: Defines the number of bars used by the Yang-Zhang volatility estimator for coordinate normalization.
Prime Verticals & Labels
- Show vertical lines: Toggles vertical lines at each prime-numbered sampling offset.
- Show prime labels: Toggles the diamond markers and prime number labels on the range boundaries.
- Text and Diamond Size: Adjusts the visual scale of labels and markers.
Prime Triangles
- Show lower/upper triangle lines: Toggles dashed outlines for the triangle fan.
- Fill colors: Customizes the color and transparency of the buyer (lower) and seller (upper) triangles.
Barometer
- Show barometer: Toggles the vertical gradient column.
- Offset & Width: Controls the horizontal position and thickness of the barometer.
- Gradient steps: Determines the smoothness of the color fade in the barometer.
Freeze & Revival
- Revival threshold (B'): Sets the percentage of opposing force required to end a "Freeze" state and reset the range.
FAQ
How do I use the barometer to identify a trend? The barometer shows structural dominance rather than a simple trend. A consistent migration of the split point toward the bottom of the column indicates increasing seller dominance, while a move toward the top indicates buyer dominance.
What does the snowflake icon (❄) mean? The snowflake indicates the "Freeze" system is active. This happens when price has closed outside the previous range, locking the old boundaries to serve as a structural reference while the indicator tracks the breakout.
