The VWAP Stdev Bands v3 indicator provides a multi-layered Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) calculation that allows for higher timeframe analysis such as Weekly or Monthly intervals. This tool helps traders identify value areas and potential overextension points by plotting standard deviation bands around a central VWAP line based on a user-defined timeframe.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify trend direction and mean reversion levels. Traders typically use the central VWAP line to gauge the intraday or intra-period trend, while the three sets of standard deviation bands act as dynamic support and resistance levels.

  • Trend Identification: When price remains above the central VWAP line, the market is considered to be in a bullish state for that timeframe.
  • Overextension: Prices reaching the 3rd or 4th standard deviation bands often indicate an overextended market, suggesting a potential mean reversion back toward the VWAP.
  • Timeframe Flexibility: By setting the timeframe to 'W' (Weekly) or 'M' (Monthly), users can track institutional value levels across longer durations regardless of the chart's current resolution.

Details

This script calculates the Volume Weighted Average Price using the sum of price multiplied by volume divided by the total volume within a specific anchor period. The standard deviation bands are calculated using the variance of the price relative to the VWAP, providing a volatility-adjusted range. Unlike standard VWAP tools that reset daily, this version allows users to define the reset anchor using the "Timeframe" input, making it suitable for swing trading and long-term analysis.

Settings

  • Timeframe: Sets the anchor period for the VWAP calculation (e.g., Weekly, Monthly).
  • Stdev above/below (1, 2, 3): Determines the multiplier for the upper and lower standard deviation bands.
  • Show second/third group of bands: Toggles the visibility of the auxiliary deviation levels to clean up the chart.
  • Show previous VWAP close: Displays the final VWAP value from the preceding period as a horizontal reference point.

FAQ

How do I use the higher timeframe options?

You can adjust the "Timeframe" setting in the inputs menu to 'W' for Weekly or 'M' for Monthly to see where the volume-weighted average price sits for those specific periods.

What do the different colors represent?

Green bands typically represent the upper standard deviations (resistance), red bands represent the lower standard deviations (support), and the central line represents the VWAP itself.
