VWAP Volatility Bands
Apr 7, 2026

The VWAP Volatility Bands indicator provides a tension-aware trend following system that anchors directional bias to a T3-smoothed Volume Weighted Average Price with dynamically scaling volatility bands.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify trend states and potential reversal points. Traders can use the T3-smoothed VWAP as a directional baseline, where the slope determines the current trend state and governs band visibility.
- Trend Identification: A rising T3-smoothed VWAP slope indicates a bullish state, displaying green bands below price. A falling slope indicates a bearish state, displaying red bands above price.
- Overextension Signals: Take-profit (TP) markers (⬨) appear when price closes beyond the outermost band (2.2 ATR) against the prevailing trend, signaling potential mean reversion.
- Entry Signals: Diamond markers (◆) plot at the outer bands when the T3 slope changes direction, suggesting a shift in momentum.
- Bounce Signals: Triangle markers indicate price "bouncing" off the inner volatility zones in the direction of the current trend, useful for continuation entries.
Details
This tool shifts VWAP analysis from a single reference line into a comprehensive volatility framework. Unlike traditional VWAP which can be reactive to short-term volume spikes, this script applies a six-stage EMA cascade (T3 smoothing) to the raw VWAP to eliminate noise while maintaining low lag.
The volatility bands are constructed using Average True Range (ATR) multipliers (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.2). This ensures that the boundaries reflect statistical market tension rather than arbitrary fixed percentages. The visual system utilizes a gradient fill that darkens as price approaches the extreme bands, providing an intuitive sense of market "stretch" or tension relative to the volume-weighted mean.
Settings
Core Settings
- VWAP Anchor: Defines the reset boundary for VWAP accumulation (Session, Week, or Month).
- T3 Length: The lookback period for the T3 EMA cascade. Higher values provide a smoother, more stable baseline.
- T3 Factor: Controls the smoothing intensity. Higher values increase smoothness but add lag.
- ATR Length: The period used for ATR calculation to scale the volatility bands.
Visual Settings
- Show Raw VWAP: Toggles the visibility of the unsmoothed cumulative VWAP as a dotted line.
- Show Bounce Signals: Enables triangle markers for trend-following bounces.
- Bounce Cooldown Bars: Minimum bars between bounce signals to prevent over-signaling in consolidation.
- Show TP Signals: Toggles the take-profit markers for overextended price action.
- Color Bars: Tints candles based on trend direction and tension distance from the T3 baseline.
- Colors (Bullish/Bearish/Basis): Customizable color inputs for the trend states and baseline.
FAQ
How do I access VWAP Volatility Bands?
You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
Which VWAP Anchor should I use?
Generally, use the Session anchor for intraday trading, the Week anchor for swing trading, and the Month anchor for long-term position management.
What do the gradient fills represent?
The gradient fills represent "volatility zones." As price moves into darker areas of the fill, it is moving further away from the volume-weighted fair value, indicating higher market tension and a higher probability of mean reversion.
