The Jsa Moving Average indicator provides a dynamic trend-following framework that functions as a trailing stop and support/resistance level to identify market direction and volatility.

Usage

The Jsa Moving Average is designed to assist traders in identifying the prevailing market trend and potential exit points. It can be utilized in the following ways:

  • Trend Direction: The indicator line changes color based on the price's relationship to the average. A green line indicates a bullish trend, while a red line signifies a bearish trend. Traders typically look for buy opportunities when the line turns green and sell opportunities when it turns red.
  • Support and Resistance: In trending markets, the indicator line often acts as a dynamic support level during uptrends or a resistance level during downtrends.
  • Trailing Stop: Due to its calculation method, the indicator provides a "berth" during extended moves, allowing traders to ride a trend. The line can serve as a manual trailing stop loss level.
  • Market Environment: The distance between the price and the indicator line can signal market conditions. A wide gap suggests a strong trend, whereas price oscillating closely around the line often indicates a choppy or range-bound market.

Details

The Jsa Moving Average was originally developed by George R. Arrington, Ph.D., and featured in Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities (V. 11:10). Despite its simple mathematical construction, it is highly effective at filtering market noise.

The calculation is derived by taking the average of the current source price and the source price from a specific number of bars ago (defined by the Length setting). By comparing the current price to this historical midpoint, the indicator determines if the current momentum is sufficiently stronger or weaker than the previous period's baseline.

Settings

  • Source: Determines the price data used for the calculation (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low).
  • Timeframe: Allows the indicator to be calculated based on a different timeframe than the current chart.
  • Allow Repainting?: Toggles whether the indicator uses data that may change after the bar closes when using the multi-timeframe functionality.
  • Allow Bar Color Change?: Enables or disables the changing of candle colors based on the current trend signal.
  • Length: Specifies the lookback period used to calculate the average.

FAQ

How do I interpret the signals of the Jsa Moving Average? A bullish signal is generated when the price is above the indicator line, turning the plot green. A bearish signal occurs when the price falls below the line, turning the plot red.

How does this indicator help in choppy markets? When the price stays very close to or frequently crosses the indicator line, it indicates a lack of clear momentum. Traders often use this as a signal to avoid trend-following entries until a wider gap between price and the average develops.
