Volume Profile
Apr 5, 2021

Get a comprehensive overview of using a volume profile estimation trading indicator designed to illuminate areas of high and low trading activity relative to price. The indicator provides traders with the ability to customize their analysis through adjustable parameters such as lookback periods, row sizes, as well as several customizable aesthetic options like gradient fills and bar flipping. One unique feature is its ability to display a rolling Point of Control (POC), making it a versatile tool for both novice and experienced traders.
Indicator Configuration Options
Basic Settings
- Lookback: This setting allows traders to define the number of recent bars used to calculate the volume profile. It's crucial for traders to select an appropriate lookback period to capture relevant market data.
- Row Size: Adjust this to set the number of rows utilized in the volume profile calculation. A higher row count increases detail but may become cluttered depending on the lookback.
- Show Rolling POC: Toggle this option to display or hide the rolling Point of Control, providing a dynamic depiction of the dominant price level over time.
Style Settings
- Width (% of the box): Determines the overall length of the bars in the context of the Lookback value chosen, affecting how data density is visualized.
- Bar Width: Customize the thickness of individual bars to enhance visual clarity in a densely populated chart.
- Flip Histogram: Reverse the display orientation of the histogram, placing its base at the most recent candlestick, which can offer fresh insights on current market activity.
- Gradient: Activate this option to color volume profile bars with intensity dictated by bar length, aiding in the immediate visual identification of high-volume areas.
- Rows Solid Color & POC Solid Color: These settings allow traders to apply consistent coloring to the bars and the POC when gradient shading is not desired.
How to Use the Volume Profile Indicator Effectively
Volume profiles offer a unique perspective by displaying volumes in relation to price rather than over time, aiming to highlight significant price levels where trading activity and interest are concentrated. As price-relative histograms, they indicate the accumulated volume within particular price zones, determined by the row size setting.
Interpreting Volume Profiles: Identifying zones of equilibrium, where volume is dense, can pinpoint key areas of price stability and potential support/resistance. High-volume nodes represent these equilibrium zones, while areas showing thin volumes indicate possible price imbalances, marking where buyers and sellers are less active.
Point of Control Significance: The POC marks the price level with the highest traded volume period, denoted by the dotted vertical line in the volume profile. This level acts as a critical support/resistance figure and is useful for plotting strategic trading entries or exits.
The dynamic nature of the rolling POC means that it adjusts over time, making it essential for evaluating the evolving strength of these support/resistance levels.
Addressing Indicator Limitations
Given that this volume profile estimate does not rely on tick data, discrepancies from an actual volume profile are possible. The computation of the rolling POC may occasionally lead to time delays, particularly with high lookback and row size values. It's recommended to use moderate values to maintain effective performance.
