Momentum and Trend Strength Entry Exit Pivot Study
Mar 4, 2019

The Momentum and Trend Strength Entry Exit Pivot Study indicator is a technical analysis tool designed to identify potential trend reversals and momentum-driven entry or exit points. It combines RSI-based pivot logic with ADX filtering and EMA cross-verification to highlight actionable zones on intraday timeframes.
Usage
The tool is primarily intended for use on low timeframes such as the 1, 2, 3, or 5-minute charts. It identifies specific "Entry" and "Exit" pivots based on momentum exhaustion and trend strength.
- Entry Pivots: Occur when the smoothed RSI crosses above a dynamically calculated lower pivot threshold while the ADX confirms sufficient trending strength.
- Exit Pivots: Triggered when the RSI reaches a high pivot threshold, if price action shows a specific drawdown percentage from the entry, or if a single candle exceeds a user-defined volatility threshold.
- Trend Filtering: The ADX threshold ensures that signals are only generated during active trends, inhibiting pivots during choppy or sideways price action.
Details
The script utilizes a dual-RSI calculation (averaging RSI of OHLC4 and HL2) to smooth out noise. It implements a dynamic threshold system where the High and Low pivot lines (rsiLh and rsiLl) adjust based on recent price behavior rather than remaining static at fixed levels.
The exit logic is particularly robust, featuring two types of protective triggers:
- Single Candle Drawdown: A volatility-based exit that triggers if a single red candle represents a significant percentage drop.
- Cumulative Drawdown: A percentage-based exit that tracks the drop from the most recent Entry Pivot point.
Settings
Core Parameters
- EMA Cross Line for Buy / Sell: Defines the period for the EMA used to verify the sell characteristic.
- EMA time Offset: Shifts the EMA threshold back in time to account for pre-pivot reversals.
- ADX lookback Length: The period used to calculate the Average Directional Index.
- ADX trending threshold: The minimum value the ADX must reach to allow pivot generation; values below this "inhibit" signals.
Thresholds
- Default High Pivot Threshold: The baseline level for overbought momentum pivots.
- Default Low Pivot Threshold: The baseline level for oversold momentum pivots.
Risk Management
- Default Single Candle Drawdown 1/10(%): The maximum allowable size for a single bearish candle before an automatic exit is triggered.
- Default Max Drawdown since last Pivot Up signal (%): The maximum percentage loss allowed from the entry price before a "Yikes" drawdown exit signal occurs.
FAQ
How do I use the ADX threshold?
The ADX threshold is used to filter out noise. If the ADX value is below the threshold, the indicator considers the market to be non-trending and will suppress buy signals.
What do the colored backgrounds indicate?
Green backgrounds represent "Buy" or Entry pivots. Red backgrounds represent "Sell" or Exit pivots. A background color matching your chart's foreground color (usually white or black) represents a "Yikes" drawdown alert.
