WMA RSI
Dec 16, 2018

The WMA RSI indicator provides an enhanced Relative Strength Index (RSI) analysis by incorporating dual Weighted Moving Averages (WMA) to filter noise and identify momentum shifts. This tool aims to deliver clearer trend direction and overbought/oversold signals compared to a standard RSI oscillator.
Usage
The Usage section focuses on interpreting the relationship between the RSI and its moving average overlays. Users can monitor the crossovers between the fast WMA (labeled EMA in settings) and the slow WMA to identify potential trend changes.
- Momentum Shifts: A crossover of the fast WMA above the slow WMA suggests bullish momentum, while a crossunder suggests bearish momentum.
- Overbought/Oversold: The indicator includes standard threshold levels (defaulting to 80 and 20). When the RSI line moves beyond these bounds, it indicates potential market extremes.
- Trend Confirmation: The slow WMA is color-coded; it turns green when the fast WMA is above it and red when it is below, providing a quick visual reference for the current trend bias.
Details
The script calculates a standard RSI based on a user-defined source and length. It then applies two distinct Weighted Moving Average calculations to that RSI value. By smoothing the oscillator with WMAs, the indicator places more weight on recent price action, reducing the lag often found in standard Simple Moving Averages while maintaining a smoother output than the raw RSI line. This dual-average approach allows traders to observe short-term fluctuations against a longer-term momentum baseline.
Settings
- Source: Determines the price data used for the RSI calculation (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low).
- RSI: Sets the period for the Relative Strength Index calculation.
- EMA (Fast WMA): Sets the period for the faster moving average applied to the RSI.
- WMA (Slow WMA): Sets the period for the slower moving average applied to the RSI.
- Upper: Defines the overbought threshold level.
- Lower: Defines the oversold threshold level.
FAQ
How do I interpret the color changes on the WMA? The slow WMA changes color based on its relationship with the fast WMA. Green indicates the fast WMA is above the slow WMA (bullish), while red indicates it is below (bearish).
What is the difference between this and a standard RSI? While a standard RSI only shows the oscillator line, this tool adds two Weighted Moving Averages to help identify crossovers and trend direction within the oscillator window.
