The ADX Volatility Moving Average indicator provides a dynamic smoothing mechanism that adjusts its sensitivity based on ADX-derived volatility to identify support and resistance levels.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify market trends and potential reversal points. Traders utilize the ADXVMA to filter out market noise during low-volatility periods while capturing significant price movements during trending phases.

  • Trend Identification: The indicator changes color based on the direction of the slope. A rising green line indicates an uptrend, while a falling red line indicates a downtrend. A neutral blue line suggests a period of consolidation or a lack of clear momentum.
  • Support and Resistance: In a sustained uptrend, the ADXVMA acts as a dynamic support level. Conversely, in a downtrend, it serves as a ceiling for price rallies.
  • Entry and Exit Signals: Crossovers between the price and the ADXVMA, or changes in the color of the moving average, can be used to signal potential entries or exits.

Details

The ADXVMA is a port of the original NinjaTrader indicator developed by Fat Tails. Unlike standard moving averages that use a fixed time window, the ADXVMA utilizes a volatility index derived from directional movement components similar to the Average Directional Index (ADX).

The script calculates the upward and downward price movements to determine a normalized fraction of trend strength. This value is then processed through a secondary normalization phase that compares the current trend index against its highest and lowest values over a specified lookback period. The resulting volatility index ($vIndex$) determines the weight of the current price in the moving average calculation. When volatility is high, the indicator follows price more closely; when volatility is low, it remains flat, effectively filtering out "choppy" price action.

Settings

  • ADXVMA Period: The lookback period used to calculate the directional components and the volatility index. Increasing this value results in a smoother line with more lag, while decreasing it makes the indicator more reactive to recent price changes.
