The Volume RSI indicator is a momentum tool that applies the Relative Strength Index formula to volume-weighted price data to help traders identify the strength and direction of volume trends. Unlike a standard RSI that focuses solely on price action, this script aims to clarify trend reversals and momentum shifts by analyzing the force behind volume movements.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on interpreting the relationship between the Volume RSI line and its signal line, as well as its position relative to key horizontal levels. Traders can use the indicator to identify potential trend changes when the Volume RSI crosses its signal line or moves into overbought and oversought territories adjusted for volume.

  • Trend Confirmation: When the Volume RSI is above the 50-axis, it suggests a bullish volume trend. Conversely, staying below 50 suggests a bearish volume trend.
  • Signal Line Crosses: A crossover of the Volume RSI above the signal line can indicate increasing bullish momentum, while a crossunder can indicate weakening strength or a bearish shift.
  • Climax and Exhaustion: The indicator features levels at 30, 40, 60, and 70. Moves beyond these levels help identify volume climaxes or exhaustion points that often precede price reversals.

Details

The Volume RSI is constructed by multiplying price data (Close, High, Low) by the current volume to create "Volume-Price" variables. The RSI is then calculated based on these weighted values rather than standard price closes.

The implementation includes:

  • Smoothing: A Weighted Moving Average (WMA) is applied to the raw RSI values to reduce noise.
  • Signal Line: A Simple Moving Average (SMA) of the smoothed RSI provides a secondary baseline for trend confirmation.
  • Volume-Price Calculation: The script calculates a synthetic High and Low based on the product of price and volume, ensuring that the momentum readings are heavily influenced by the intensity of market activity.

Settings

  • RSI: Sets the lookback period for the RSI calculation (default is 14).
  • Signal: Sets the period for the Simple Moving Average signal line (default is 28).
  • Smooth: Adjusts the period for the initial smoothing of the RSI values (default is 1).

FAQ

How do I use the Volume RSI?

You can use it to identify volume-backed momentum shifts. Look for crossovers between the RSI line and the signal line, or monitor the 50-level axis for overall trend direction.

What makes this different from a standard RSI?

The standard RSI only considers price changes. The Volume RSI weights price changes by the volume traded during that period, making it more sensitive to high-activity market moves.
