Moving Average Band Strategy
Nov 16, 2025

The Moving Average Band Strategy indicator provides a comprehensive breakout and trend-continuation system that executes trades based on price movements relative to adaptive volatility bands.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify trend shifts and momentum breakouts. The strategy triggers entries when the price closes outside of the defined band range and manages exits through fixed risk-management levels or trend reversals.
Entry Conditions
- Long Entry: Occurs when the price crosses above the Upper Band, provided long trades are enabled and no active long position exists.
- Short Entry: Occurs when the price crosses below the Lower Band, provided short trades are enabled and no active short position exists.
Exit Logic
The strategy offers two primary methods for exiting positions:
- Risk:Reward Mode: When enabled, the script calculates a fixed Stop-Loss and Take-Profit based on the initial risk (distance between entry and the opposite band).
- Trend Reversal Mode: When the Risk:Reward toggle is disabled, trades remain active until a reverse crossover occurs (e.g., a long trade exits when price crosses under the lower band).
Details
The strategy is constructed using two primary components: a central moving average logic and a band offset mechanism. Unlike standard envelopes, the Upper Band is derived from the moving average of price Highs, while the Lower Band is derived from the moving average of price Lows.
Moving Average Types
The script allows users to select from six different calculation methods to suit various market conditions:
- SMA/EMA: Standard options for general trend following.
- WMA/HMA: Weighted and Hull variations for reduced lag and increased responsiveness.
- VWMA: Incorporates volume data into the trend calculation.
- RMA: Specifically designed for smoothing, commonly used in indicators like the RSI.
Visual Elements
The indicator includes dynamic visual feedback, such as color-coded fills between the bands (green for bullish, red for bearish, yellow for neutral) and real-time plotting of Stop-Loss and Take-Profit lines while a trade is active. Price labels are also generated at the exact execution points for clarity.
Settings
General Settings
- Moving Average Type: Selects the mathematical foundation for the bands (SMA, EMA, WMA, HMA, VWMA, RMA).
- MA Length: Determines the lookback period for the band calculations.
- Band Offset %: Applies a percentage-based shift to widen or narrow the bands relative to the MA of Highs/Lows.
Strategy Settings
- Enable Long Trades: Toggles the execution of bullish breakout signals.
- Enable Short Trades: Toggles the execution of bearish breakout signals.
- Use Risk:Reward Target: When checked, the strategy uses fixed TP/SL targets. When unchecked, it uses reverse band crossovers for exits.
- Risk:Reward Ratio: Sets the multiplier for the take-profit target relative to the initial risk.
