The Deadband Hysteresis Supertrend indicator provides a two-stage trend detection system that filters market noise using a deadband baseline before applying Supertrend logic with optional flip hysteresis and adverse ATR exits. This tool aims to reduce whipsaws in choppy markets while maintaining clear regime identification during trending periods.

Usage

The Deadband Hysteresis Supertrend can be used as a comprehensive trend-following system or a bias filter.

  • Trend Bias: When the candles are painted in the long color and the Supertrend line is below the price, a bullish regime is active. Conversely, when candles are painted in the short color and the line is above price, a bearish regime is active.
  • Trailing Stop: The active Supertrend band serves as a dynamic trailing stop. Traders can monitor pullbacks toward the baseline; if the price fails to breach the opposite band, the trend is often considered intact.
  • Noise Filtering: Users can adjust the "Enter Mult" and "Response" settings to filter out micro-fluctuations. In choppy markets, increasing the "Flip Offset ATR" adds "stickiness" to the current trend, requiring a more significant move to trigger a reversal signal.
  • Risk Management: The "Adverse Stop K·ATR" feature acts as an emergency exit, triggering a cross marker (✖) if the price moves significantly against a new trend signal, even if the main Supertrend hasn't flipped.

Details

The indicator operates through a multi-layered calculation process:

  1. Deadband Baseline (DBHF): Unlike standard moving averages, this baseline only moves when price deviates beyond a specified "deadband" (calculated via ATR, Percent, Ticks, or Points). This creates a stable centerline that ignores minor price action.
  2. Supertrend Construction: Traditional Supertrend bands are calculated using the DBHF baseline as the anchor rather than raw price, which further smoothens the trailing logic.
  3. Flip Hysteresis: An additional buffer (Flip Offset) is applied to the bands. Price must not only cross the band but exceed it by the offset amount to trigger a trend change.
  4. Adverse Exit Logic: Tracks the entry price of a trend flip and monitors for a reversal exceeding a user-defined ATR multiple (K), providing an early exit signal during high-volatility failures.

Settings

Deadband Filter

  • Price Source: The price series used for filtering (default is Close).
  • Threshold Mode: The method used to calculate the deadband size (ATR, Percent, Ticks, or Points).
  • ATR Length/Mult: Parameters for the deadband calculation when ATR mode is selected.
  • Enter Mult: A multiplier that scales the deadband size required for the baseline to move.
  • Response: Controls how quickly the baseline adjusts to price changes outside the deadband.

Supertrend

  • ATR Period: The lookback period for the ATR used in band calculation.
  • Factor: The multiplier applied to the ATR to determine band distance.
  • Flip Offset ATR: An extra margin required to flip the trend direction, used to reduce whipsaws.

Stops & UI

  • Adverse Stop K·ATR: Sets the distance for the adverse exit signal.
  • Show Supertrend/Baseline: Toggles the visibility of the primary trend lines.
  • Paint Candles: Enables color-coding of candles based on the active trend.
  • Show Signals: Toggles the display of Long (𝕃), Short (𝕊), and Exit (✖) markers.

FAQ

How do I access the Deadband Hysteresis Supertrend?

You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.

What is the purpose of the Flip Offset?

The Flip Offset requires the price to move a specific distance beyond the Supertrend band before a reversal is confirmed, helping to filter out false breakouts in sideways markets.

Why does the baseline sometimes stay flat?

The baseline remains flat when price movements are within the "Deadband" zone. It only advances when price moves far enough to be considered significant, which helps eliminate noise.
