Footprint strategy
Apr 9, 2024

The Footprint strategy indicator is a trading tool that utilizes volume imbalance data derived from footprint calculation technology to identify high-probability entry points based on order flow dynamics. By analyzing buy and sell pressure within individual bars, it provides automated signals for both trend-following and reversal scenarios.
Usage
The strategy generates two primary types of signals:
- Trend Entries: Occur when the current buy volume on a bar exceeds the sell volume and at least one imbalance line is present. This indicates strong bullish momentum supported by aggressive market participants.
- Reversal Entries: Triggered when a bar is closing lower (falling) but the overall market trend (calculated from a higher timeframe) remains positive, provided the buy imbalance volume exceeds the sell imbalance volume. This captures potential "buy the dip" opportunities within a larger uptrend.
Upon signal execution, the strategy automatically places limit orders with configurable Take Profit and Stop Loss levels based on percentage values.
For optimal performance, it is recommended to use the strategy on a 15-minute timeframe. Users should calibrate the Take Profit and Stop Loss inputs according to the specific price volatility and tick size of the asset being traded.
Details
This strategy implements footprint logic by collecting granular volume data from a lower timeframe (e.g., 1-second or 1-minute) to reconstruct the distribution of buy and sell orders at specific price levels within a bar.
Key technical concepts include:
- Imbalance Calculation: Compares diagonal bid/ask volume to identify levels where one side significantly outweighs the other based on the "Imbalance Percent" setting.
- Stacked Imbalances: Identifies multiple consecutive levels of imbalance, which often act as strong support or resistance zones.
- Trend Filtering: Integrates a higher timeframe trend filter to ensure entries align with the broader market direction, reducing the risk of trading against major momentum.
Settings
Strategy
- Stop loss: The percentage distance from the entry price to place the stop loss order.
- Enable stop loss: Toggles the activation of the stop loss order.
- Take Profit: The percentage distance from the entry price to place the take profit order.
- Calculation timeframe: The lower timeframe used to fetch volume data. Using the "1S" (1 second) timeframe provides maximum accuracy.
- Trend timeframe: The timeframe used to determine the general market trend.
- Enable trend: Toggles the higher timeframe trend filter for entry signals.
Footprint Calculation
- Count show bars: Determines how many recent bars are processed for the footprint calculation.
- Display all available bars: When enabled, calculates the strategy on all history available within the data limits.
- Ticks Per Row: Defines the vertical height of each footprint row in ticks.
- Auto: Automatically calculates the optimal "Ticks Per Row" based on bar volatility.
- Max row: Sets the maximum allowed number of rows per bar to maintain chart clarity.
- Imbalance Percent: The threshold percentage used to identify a volume imbalance between buyers and sellers.
- Stacked levels: The required number of consecutive imbalance levels to trigger extended imbalance lines.
FAQ
How do I access Footprint strategy?
You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
Why are the footprint calculations not appearing on my chart?
Ensure that the "Calculation timeframe" is set to a timeframe supported by your subscription. If you do not have access to second-based data, set this to "1 minute".
Can I use this strategy for shorting?
The current implementation focus provided in the logic targets long entries based on buy imbalances and positive trend alignment. Modifying the source code would be required to mirror the logic for short positions.
