The VWAP-Anchored MACD indicator provides a refined momentum model built on volume-weighted price rather than raw closes, allowing users to track trend strength based on real liquidity flow.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify market momentum and potential entry points. By replacing traditional price inputs with anchored VWAP, the indicator aligns momentum reading with volume distribution across specific trading cycles.

  • Trend Identification: When the MACD line is above the signal line and the histogram expands, the market is in a bullish phase. Conversely, when the MACD line is below the signal line and the histogram contracts, it indicates bearish pressure.
  • Signal Filtering: The indicator includes a zero-line threshold. Crossovers that occur very close to the zero line are suppressed to avoid "choppy" or weak signals during market consolidation.
  • Execution Cues: Optional diamond markers appear on the chart to signify high-conviction crossovers that have passed the zero-line distance filter.
  • Visual Analysis: Gradient coloring on the MACD line and histogram, along with candle coloring, provides an immediate visual representation of trend strength and direction.

Details

The VWAP-Anchored MACD reconstructs the standard MACD engine by utilizing anchored VWAP (Volume-Weighted Average Price) as the primary input. Traditional MACD measures the difference between two exponential moving averages (EMAs) of price; this version measures the difference between two EMAs of volume-weighted price.

The script allows for three different anchor periods:

  • Session: Resets daily, ideal for intraday trading.
  • Week: Resets weekly, suitable for short-term swing trading.
  • Month: Resets monthly, providing a macro view of capital flow and momentum.

By filtering signals based on their distance from the zero line, the tool addresses a common flaw in traditional momentum oscillators where frequent, low-conviction crossovers occur during range-bound price action.

Settings

  • VWAP Anchor: Selects the timeframe for the VWAP reset (Session, Week, or Month).
  • Fast Length: Sets the period for the fast VWAP EMA (default is 12).
  • Slow Length: Sets the period for the slow VWAP EMA (default is 26).
  • Signal Length: Sets the smoothing period for the signal line (default is 9).
  • Show Buy/Sell Signals: Toggles the visibility of diamond markers on the price chart.
  • Show Histogram: Toggles the visibility of the MACD histogram.
  • Zero Line Threshold: Sets the minimum distance from the zero line required for a crossover to be considered a "valid" signal.
  • Colors: Customizes the colors for bullish, bearish, and signal line visualizations.

FAQ

How do I access VWAP-Anchored MACD?

You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.

What is the advantage of using VWAP instead of regular price for MACD?

Using VWAP ensures that the momentum calculation accounts for the volume traded at each price level. This results in a momentum reading that is more reflective of actual liquidity shifts rather than just price movement.

Why are some crossovers not showing signals?

The indicator uses a "Zero Line Threshold" to filter out noise. If a crossover occurs within the specified threshold distance from the zero line, it is considered too weak to trigger a diamond signal or a cross dot.
