Volatility Momentum Score
Sep 14, 2025

The Volatility Momentum Score indicator provides a unified momentum reading by blending price action and volatility z-scores into a single oscillator. This tool aims to help traders identify trend continuations, overextended market conditions, and potential price reversals through dynamic standard deviation bands and multiple signaling modes.
Usage
The script can be used in two primary ways depending on the selected Signal Type:
- Trend Mode: Focuses on momentum breakouts. When the average score crosses the dynamic bands, "Long" and "Short" labels are generated on the chart. This mode is designed for traders looking to ride established momentum.
- Reversion Mode: Focuses on identifying overheated or exhausted markets. The chart background highlights areas where the score has reached extreme levels, suggesting potential mean reversion or cooling periods.
Additional visual cues include:
- Oversold/Overbought Signs: Triangle markers (▲ and ▼) appear when the momentum score exits the standard deviation bands, signaling a potential shift in sentiment.
- Dynamic Coloring: The main oscillator line and price candles change color based on the momentum state, providing immediate visual feedback on market direction.
Details
The indicator operates by calculating two separate z-scores: one for the price (relative to its EMA) and one for the volatility (standard deviation of price). These two scores are averaged to create the Volatility Momentum Score.
To define extreme levels, the tool calculates standard deviation bands based on the history of the score itself. This creates a self-adjusting framework where "overbought" or "oversold" levels are not static but evolve based on recent market volatility.
Settings
Volatility Momentum Score
- Price Z Length: Sets the lookback period for the price-based z-score calculation.
- Volatility Z Length: Sets the lookback period for the volatility-based z-score calculation.
SD Bands
- Band Length: Defines the number of bars used to calculate the standard deviation of the momentum score.
- + Band Multiplier: Adjusts the sensitivity of the upper band; higher values require more extreme momentum to trigger signals.
- - Band Multiplier: Adjusts the sensitivity of the lower band; lower (more negative) values require more extreme momentum to trigger signals.
Display
- Select Signal Type: Switches between Trend and Reversion logic for visual signals and background highlights.
- Display Oversold/Overbought Signs: Toggles the visibility of the triangle markers.
- Background Transparency: Controls the opacity of the background shading used in Reversion mode.
FAQ
How do I interpret the Trend signals? A "Long" signal occurs when momentum crosses above the upper band, while a "Short" signal occurs when it crosses below the lower band, indicating a potential trend acceleration.
Can I adjust the sensitivity of the reversals? Yes, by modifying the Band Multiplier settings, you can make the bands wider (less sensitive) or narrower (more sensitive) to suit different assets or timeframes.
How can I access the Volatility Momentum Score? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
