RSI STEP TREND
Sep 19, 2019

The RSI STEP TREND indicator is a hybrid oscillator designed to identify directional shifts by applying an efficient trend-stepping mechanism to a smoothed Relative Strength Index. It combines momentum tracking with volatility-adjusted price steps to filter out market noise and highlight significant trend reversals.
Usage
The RSI STEP TREND can be used as a primary trend filter or signal generator within a trading strategy. Because it uses a "step" logic, the indicator line remains flat until price momentum exceeds a specific volatility-based threshold, at which point it jumps to a new level.
- Trend Identification: A green line indicates an upward trend, while a red line indicates a downward trend.
- Crossovers/Signals: When the indicator changes direction (from red to green or vice versa), visual "UP" or "Down" labels appear on the oscillator pane, signifying a potential entry or exit point.
- Filtering: Traders can use the flat periods of the line to avoid trading in low-volatility environments where price action is sideways.
Details
This tool is based on the concepts of the Efficient Trend Step and custom RSI smoothing. It calculates an Efficiency Ratio (ER) based on the price change over a set length relative to the sum of absolute changes. This ratio is then used to weight a dynamic deviation (using standard deviations of the RSI).
The "Step" logic is implemented by comparing the current RSI value to the previous step level. If the current value does not deviate by more than the calculated threshold, the indicator remains at its previous value, effectively creating a "staircase" effect that ignores minor fluctuations.
Settings
- Smooth: Sets the initial EMA smoothing period for the source price.
- RSI Period Length: Determines the lookback period for the internal RSI calculation.
- Source: The price input used for calculations (default is Close).
- Length: The lookback period for the Efficiency Ratio (ER) calculation.
- Fast: The period for the fast standard deviation used in the deviation calculation.
- Slow: The period for the slow standard deviation used in the deviation calculation.
FAQ
How do I interpret the "UP" and "Down" labels?
The labels appear when the stepping mechanism detects a break in the current trend direction. An "UP" label occurs when the RSI value breaks above the previous step plus the dynamic deviation, while a "Down" label occurs when it breaks below.
Can I use this for alerts?
Yes, the script includes alert conditions for both "Long" (UP) and "Short" (Down) signals, which can be configured to trigger once per bar.
