Kaufman's Adaptive Moving Average Bands
Jan 28, 2017

The Kaufman's Adaptive Moving Average Bands indicator provides a multi-layered trend visualization tool that utilizes adaptive smoothing to identify market momentum and potential reversal points.
Usage
The Kaufman's Adaptive Moving Average (KAMA) Bands can be used to identify trend direction and volatility-adjusted support and resistance levels. By plotting six distinct bands based on different smoothing constants, the tool allows traders to visualize the strength of a trend.
- Trend Identification: When the price is trading above the bands and the bands are colored green, a bullish trend is indicated. Conversely, price trading below red bands indicates a bearish trend.
- Momentum Strength: The spreading or narrowing of the six bands indicates changes in market volatility and trend acceleration.
- Crossovers: The script includes logic for crossovers between specific bands (specifically Band 2 and Band 5), which can serve as signals for potential trend shifts.
- Cloud Analysis: The area between the second and fifth bands is filled to create a "cloud," helping traders quickly identify the core trend zone.
Details
The script is based on Perry Kaufman's Adaptive Moving Average, which adjusts its sensitivity based on market noise (volatility). It calculates an Efficiency Ratio (ER) by dividing the price change over a period by the sum of absolute price changes.
The indicator expands on the standard KAMA by calculating two separate Efficiency Ratios (Fast and Slow) and applying six different "Fastest Smoothing Constants." This creates a ribbon-like effect. The color logic compares the primary fast-length bands against a slower-length baseline to determine if the current price action is bullish, bearish, or neutral relative to the adaptive averages.
Settings
- Price Input: Determines the source data used for the calculations (e.g., Close, Open, HL2).
- Fast: Sets the period for the primary Efficiency Ratio calculation.
- Slow: Sets the period for the secondary Efficiency Ratio calculation used for trend baseline comparisons.
- Fastest SC Band 1-6: These values represent the individual smoothing constants for each of the six bands, allowing for granular control over the ribbon's width and sensitivity.
- Slowest SC: Defines the lower bound of the smoothing constant, dictating how the average behaves during periods of high market noise.
FAQ
How do I interpret the colors of the KAMA bands? Green bands signify a bullish environment where the fast adaptive average is above the slow average and price is above the band. Red bands signify a bearish environment where the fast average is below the slow average and price is below the band. Neutral colors appear when these conditions are not fully met.
What do the KAMA Band Bullish/Bearish Cross alerts signify? These alerts trigger when the second band crosses over or under the fifth band, signaling a potential change in the medium-term trend direction.
