The MACD_trendtrader indicator aims to identify high-probability trend-following opportunities by combining Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) signals with a long-term Exponential Moving Average (EMA) trend filter. It is designed to help traders enter pullbacks within an established trend, particularly effective on lower timeframes like the 5-minute and 15-minute charts.

Usage

The indicator uses a background coloring system to define the primary market trend based on the relationship between the 55 EMA and 200 EMA.

  • Bullish Trend: A green background indicates that the 55 EMA is above the 200 EMA. In this environment, traders look for bullish MACD crossovers that occur below the zero line, representing a momentum shift after a temporary pullback.
  • Bearish Trend: A red background indicates that the 55 EMA is below the 200 EMA. In this environment, traders look for bearish MACD crossunders that occur above the zero line, representing a momentum shift after a temporary rally.

This tool is widely applicable across Forex pairs and traditional equity markets where trend-following strategies are prevalent.

Details

The script calculates the standard MACD line (the difference between a fast and slow average) and a signal line. Users can toggle between Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) or Simple Moving Averages (SMA) for both the oscillator and the signal line smoothing.

The trend filter logic utilizes a 55-period and 200-period EMA cross. When the faster 55 EMA is above the 200 EMA, the trend is considered bullish; conversely, when it is below, the trend is considered bearish. This dual-layer approach ensures that momentum signals from the MACD are only considered when they align with the broader market direction.

Settings

  • Fast Length: The period for the fast moving average used in the MACD calculation.
  • Slow Length: The period for the slow moving average used in the MACD calculation.
  • Source: The price data point used for calculations (e.g., Close).
  • Signal Smoothing: The period used to calculate the signal line from the MACD line.
  • Simple MA (Oscillator): If enabled, uses SMA instead of EMA for the MACD line calculation.
  • Simple MA (Signal Line): If enabled, uses SMA instead of EMA for the signal line calculation.

FAQ

How do I use the MACD_trendtrader?

Apply the indicator to your chart and observe the background color to determine the trend. Look for MACD histogram crossovers that align with that trend direction for potential entry points.

What timeframes are best for this script?

While it can be used on any timeframe, it is optimized for lower timeframes such as the 5-minute and 15-minute intervals for catching short-to-medium term pullbacks.
