RSI-MTF-Histo-Entry
Jun 4, 2018

The RSI-MTF-Histo-Entry indicator provides a multi-timeframe histogram analysis of the Relative Strength Index (RSI) or Money Flow Index (MFI) to identify high-probability entry points and trend direction. By calculating the difference between the oscillator and its EMA, the tool highlights momentum shifts while applying additional smoothing to filter out market noise.
Usage
The indicator can be used to identify potential trend reversals or continuations through its histogram and smoothing line. Traders can look for crossovers of the zero line or changes in the histogram slope to determine entry signals.
Common use cases include:
- Trend Confirmation: Using the multi-timeframe (MTF) functionality to view the RSI status of higher timeframes (e.g., 1h or 3h) on a lower timeframe chart to ensure trades align with the broader trend.
- Momentum Shifts: Observing the smoothed histogram line; a green slope indicates bullish momentum, while a red slope indicates bearish momentum.
- Overbought/Oversold Identification: Monitoring the RSI/MFI line relative to the 70/30 thresholds to spot extreme market conditions.
- Visual Bias: Enabling the "Color Pricebars" feature to overlay the trend logic directly onto the candlestick chart for easier interpretation.
Details
The script calculates the difference between a base oscillator (RSI or MFI) and its Exponential Moving Average (EMA). This difference is plotted as a histogram. To further refine the signals, a secondary EMA is applied to this histogram data, creating a smoothed signal line.
The Multi-Timeframe (MTF) logic allows users to pull data from a specific timeframe regardless of the current chart's resolution. This is particularly useful for finding "Entry results" on lower timeframes while respecting the structure of higher timeframes.
Settings
- Use Current Chart Resolution?: When checked, the indicator uses the timeframe currently selected on the chart.
- Use Different Timeframe?: Specifies a custom timeframe for the MTF calculations if the current resolution box is unchecked.
- Base Indicator: Selects between the Relative Strength Index (RSI) or the Money Flow Index (MFI) as the primary calculation source.
- Source: The price data used for the oscillator calculations (default is Close).
- RSI/MFI Length: The lookback period for the base oscillator calculation.
- Smoothing Length: The period for the secondary EMA applied to the histogram.
- Overbought/Oversold: Level thresholds for the oscillator (default 70 and 30).
- Show RSI or MFI line: Toggles the visibility of the primary oscillator line.
- Show RSI or MFI background color: Toggles background highlights based on oscillator position relative to 50 and threshold levels.
- Color Pricebars: Enables or disables coloring of the chart bars based on the selected logic.
- Color Bars Based On: Selection of the logic used for bar coloring, including Histogram Slope, +/- Histogram, or Trend Bias.
FAQ
How do I use the MTF feature effectively?
To use MTF, uncheck "Use Current Chart Resolution" and input a higher timeframe like "60" (1 hour) or "180" (3 hours). This allows you to see higher-level momentum shifts while trading on smaller timeframes.
What is the difference between selecting RSI and MFI?
RSI is a momentum oscillator based solely on price change, while MFI (Money Flow Index) incorporates volume data into the calculation, providing a volume-weighted view of momentum.
