The Volatility Reversion Bands indicator identifies potential market reversal points by merging standard deviation-based bands with Average True Range (ATR) to provide a comprehensive framework for volatility and momentum analysis.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on identifying overbought and oversold market conditions through price interaction with dynamic bands. Traders can use the indicator to spot potential turning points when price reaches extreme levels relative to its recent mean and current volatility regime.

  • Bullish Reversals: A strong buy signal (▲+) is generated when the price crosses below the lower outer reversal band.
  • Bearish Reversals: A strong sell signal (▼+) is generated when the price crosses above the upper outer reversal band.
  • Weak Signals: When enabled, the indicator provides early cues (small ▲ or ▼) when the price is approaching the outer bands but hasn't yet crossed them.
  • Color-Coded Bars: The gradient bar coloring provides a real-time visual of price positioning, where green indicates proximity to the lower band and red indicates proximity to the upper band.

Details

This tool combines two distinct volatility measurements—Bollinger Bands and ATR—to create a more robust system. While Bollinger Bands offer a statistical baseline for "normal" price movement based on standard deviation, they can struggle during abrupt volatility spikes. By adding an ATR-based component, the bands become more responsive to real-time market expansions and contractions.

The resulting "Reversion Bands" are calculated by taking a central Simple Moving Average (SMA), adding/subtracting a standard deviation multiplier (Bollinger Band), and then further extending that range by an ATR-based distance. This synergy helps filter out noise during choppy markets while providing wider room for price to move during high-volatility events like news releases.

Settings

Main Calculations

  • Lookback Length: Sets the period for calculating the Simple Moving Average, Standard Deviation, and ATR.
  • Standard Deviation Multiplier: Controls the width of the inner Bollinger Band component.
  • ATR Multiplier: Sets the additional distance used to define the outer reversal bands.
  • Include Weak Signals (Near Bands)?: Toggles the display of subtle markers when the price is within a specific threshold (top/bottom 10%) of the reversal bands.

FAQ

How do I interpret the gradient bar colors?

The bars transition from green to red based on the price's position between the upper and lower reversal bands. Green bars mean the price is closer to the lower (oversold) band, while red bars indicate the price is near the upper (overbought) band.

Can this be used for trend following?

While primarily a reversion tool, the ATR layer helps confirm momentum. In a strong trend, price staying near the outer bands with high ATR can signal a volatility expansion rather than an immediate reversal.
