The Optimized Trend Tracker indicator provides a streamlined method for identifying the prevailing market trend and generating directional signals based on optimized price trailing. It functions by tracking price movements through a specialized moving average and an offset tracker to determine whether the market is in an uptrend or a downtrend.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on identifying trend direction and trade entries through price positioning and line crossovers.

  • Trend Identification: An uptrend is typically identified when prices remain above the OTT line. Conversely, a downtrend is indicated when prices trade below the OTT line.
  • Support Line Crossovers: A common entry strategy involves the interaction between the Support Line (moving average) and the OTT line. A bullish signal is generated when the Support Line crosses over the OTT line, while a bearish signal occurs when the Support Line crosses under the OTT line.
  • Price Crossovers: Traders can use price action directly against the OTT line. A move above the OTT line suggests a long bias, while a move below suggests a short bias.
  • Color Changes: If the highlight feature is enabled, the OTT line changes color based on its slope. A green line making higher highs indicates bullish momentum, while a red line making lower lows indicates bearish momentum.

Details

The Optimized Trend Tracker is built upon the concepts of the Moving Stop Loss (MOST) indicator. It utilizes two primary components: a Moving Average (Support Line) and the OTT calculation itself. The tool is designed to filter out minor price fluctuations (noise) while remaining responsive enough to capture significant trend shifts.

The indicator offers multiple moving average types for the internal calculation, including Variable Index Dynamic Average (VAR), Exponential Moving Average (EMA), and Time Series Forecast (TSF). The OTT line is derived by applying a percentage-based optimization coefficient to the selected moving average, creating a trailing threshold that adjusts dynamically to market volatility.

Settings

General Settings

  • Source: Determines the price data used for calculations (e.g., Close, HL2, OHLC4).
  • OTT Period: Sets the lookback period for the moving average. Smaller values increase sensitivity to price changes, while larger values focus on long-term trends.
  • OTT Percent: An optimization coefficient that determines the distance of the OTT line from the price. Small values capture short-term fluctuations, while large values are suited for long-term trend tracking.
  • Moving Average Type: Selects the mathematical model for the support line. Options include SMA, EMA, WMA, TMA, VAR, WWMA, ZLEMA, and TSF.

Visuals & Signals

  • Show Support Line?: Toggles the visibility of the primary moving average.
  • Show Support Line Crossing Signals?: Displays Buy/Sell labels when the Support Line and OTT line cross.
  • Show Price/OTT Crossing Signals?: Displays labels when the price source crosses the OTT line.
  • Show OTT Color Changes?: Enables the line to change color based on directional movement.
  • Show OTT Color Change Signals?: Displays Buy/Sell labels based on the internal slope change of the OTT line.
  • Highlighter On/Off?: Enables background coloring between the price and the OTT line to emphasize trend state.

FAQ

How do I interpret the OTT line color? The color typically represents the direction of the trend tracker's slope; green indicates upward movement and red indicates downward movement, provided the highlight setting is enabled.

What is the difference between the Period and the Percent settings? The Period controls the window of data the moving average considers, while the Percent acts as a multiplier that offsets the tracker from the price to avoid premature exits during volatility.
