The Volume Profile & Smart Money Explorer indicator provides a comprehensive hourly volume analysis framework designed to identify institutional participation and liquidity patterns throughout the trading day.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to analyze market activity across different time windows. By categorizing volume into specific hourly segments, traders can identify when "Smart Money" is most active and align their strategies with peak liquidity.

  • Institutional Tracking: Use the "Institutional Volume" plot to identify bars where volume exceeds the user-defined threshold. This helps in spotting accumulation or distribution phases.
  • Directional Bias: Compare the "Up Volume" and "Down Volume" columns to determine if buying or selling pressure is dominant during specific times of the day.
  • Session Analysis: Utilize the on-screen dashboard to view historical averages for each hour. This allows traders to anticipate high-volatility windows and avoid trading during "thin" market periods with low participation.
  • Threshold Filtering: Adjust the volume threshold to filter out retail noise, focusing only on large block orders and institutional flow.

Details

The script employs a normalization process to compare current volume against a historical lookback period. This ensures that "high volume" is relative to recent market conditions rather than an arbitrary fixed number.

  • Normalization: Volume is divided by its moving average over the specified lookback period. A value of 1.0 represents average volume, while values above the user-defined threshold (e.g., 1.5x) are classified as institutional activity.
  • Hourly Binning: The indicator maintains arrays for 24 distinct hourly slots. As new data arrives, it updates the total, up, down, and institutional volume for the corresponding hour, calculating a running average based on the number of samples collected.
  • Visual Dashboard: A table displayed on the chart summarizes the average performance of every hour of the day. It highlights the hours with the highest total volume and the strongest institutional presence, providing a statistical map of intraday liquidity.

Settings

  • Lookback Period (Days): Determines the number of days used to calculate the average volume for normalization.
  • Volume Threshold (x Average): Sets the multiplier for identifying institutional activity. For example, a setting of 1.5 means volume must be 150% of the average to be flagged as "Smart Money."
  • Smoothing Period: Intended for internal calculation smoothing (Note: primarily affects future expansion of visual components).

FAQ

How do I identify "Smart Money" on the chart? Institutional activity is represented by the purple columns in the indicator pane and is triggered whenever the normalized volume exceeds the "Volume Threshold" setting.

Can I use this on any timeframe? While the logic is optimized for intraday timeframes to capture hourly distribution, it can be applied to various charts to see how volume aggregates within the 24-hour cycle.
