The Vervoort Volatility Bands indicator provides a smoothed approach to volatility-based envelopes, helping traders identify potential overextended price levels and trend reversals.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on identifying price extremes and trend direction. Traders can use the bands similarly to Bollinger Bands, looking for price reactions near the upper and lower boundaries.

  • Trend Identification: When the price maintains a position above the midline, it suggests a bullish bias, while staying below the midline suggests a bearish bias.
  • Reversal Signals: Prices touching or exceeding the Upper Band may indicate an overbought condition, potentially signaling a pullback. Conversely, prices touching or dropping below the Lower Band may indicate an oversold condition.
  • Crossovers: The script includes alerts for when price crosses back into the bands (e.g., crossing above the lower band), which can be used as entry or exit triggers.

Details

Developed by Sylvain Vervoort, these volatility bands differ from standard versions by utilizing highly smoothed data and a unique calculation for price deviation. Instead of using standard deviation, the script calculates a "typical deviation" based on the relationship between current price levels and previous lows. This result is then smoothed using Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) to create more responsive yet stable boundaries. A specific adjustment multiplier is also applied to the lower band to account for the asymmetrical nature of market drops versus rises.

Settings

  • Average Length: Determines the period used for the Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) that smooth the price data and the midline.
  • Volatility Length: Sets the lookback period for the Simple Moving Average (SMA) calculation of the price deviation.
  • Deviation Multiplier: A coefficient that determines the width of the bands relative to the calculated volatility.
  • Lower Band Adjustment Multiplier: A specific multiplier used to adjust the distance of the lower band independently of the upper band.

FAQ

How do I use the Vervoort Volatility Bands?

The indicator is used to identify market extremes. Traders look for price touches on the outer bands to anticipate reversals or use the midline to gauge the current trend momentum.

How does this differ from Bollinger Bands?

Unlike Bollinger Bands which use standard deviation, this tool uses a custom deviation formula based on price range and applies multiple layers of smoothing (EMA/SMA) to provide a less erratic set of bands.
