The Moving Average EMA SMA Cross Strategy indicator provides a systematic framework for identifying trend reversals and momentum shifts through the interaction of three distinct moving average types. By utilizing a combination of Exponential (EMA), Simple (SMA), and Volume Weighted (VWMA) moving averages, this tool helps traders visualize trend strength and automate entry and exit signals based on crossover logic.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on the relationship between the fast and slow moving averages to determine market bias. Traders can use this tool to identify bullish or bearish regimes through visual cloud fills and automated strategy markers.

  • Trend Identification: When the Fast EMA is above the Slow SMA, the strategy identifies a bullish trend, typically represented by a green fill between the lines. Conversely, when the Fast EMA falls below the Slow SMA, a bearish trend is identified, represented by a red fill.
  • Signal Execution: The strategy is designed to execute a "Long Entry" when the fast-moving average crosses over the slow-moving average and a "Short Entry" (reversing the position) when the fast-moving average crosses under.
  • Multi-Confirmation: By incorporating a third "Slower" VWMA and RSI calculations, the script allows for more complex logic where signals are only triggered if the price or momentum aligns with the broader trend.

Details

The script utilizes three different calculation methods to provide a comprehensive view of price action:

  1. Fast EMA (Exponential Moving Average): Reacts more quickly to recent price changes, making it the primary lead indicator for identifying potential reversals.
  2. Slow SMA (Simple Moving Average): Provides a smoothed baseline to filter out minor price fluctuations and establish the core trend direction.
  3. Slower VWMA (Volume Weighted Moving Average): Used as a secondary filter to ensure that trend signals are supported by volume-weighted price levels.

The strategy is built on refactored logic originally shared by lsills and criptonomics, optimized for modern charting performance and visual clarity. It includes integrated alerts that trigger upon the closing of a bar where a crossover has occurred, ensuring traders are notified of trend shifts in real-time.

Settings

  • Fast EMA Source: Determines the price data (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low) used to calculate the Fast Moving Average.
  • Fast EMA Period: Sets the lookback window for the Fast EMA; lower values increase sensitivity.
  • Slow SMA Source: Determines the price data used for the primary Slow Moving Average calculation.
  • Slow SMA Period: Sets the lookback window for the Slow SMA, defining the primary trend baseline.
  • Slower SMA Source: Determines the price data used for the third filtering average (VWMA).
  • Slower SMA Period: Sets the lookback window for the Slower VWMA and the internal RSI calculation.

FAQ

How do I interpret the colored background between the lines? The fill between the Fast and Slow averages indicates the current state of the strategy: a green fill signifies the Fast MA is above the Slow MA (Bullish), while a red fill signifies the Fast MA is below the Slow MA (Bearish).

Can I change the moving average types? The script is hard-coded to use an EMA for the fast line, an SMA for the slow line, and a VWMA for the slower filter line. You can adjust the periods and sources for these in the settings menu.
