Momentum Acceleration by DGT
Jul 8, 2020

The Momentum Acceleration by DGT indicator measures the rate of change in price or volume velocity to identify trend shifts and potential trade setups through acceleration-based modeling.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify trend direction and momentum shifts. The indicator calculates the "speed" of price movement and its subsequent "acceleration" to provide early signals of trend exhaustion or reversal.
- Trend Identification: Bullish momentum is indicated when the acceleration value is positive, while bearish momentum is indicated when the acceleration value is negative.
- Signal Arrows: The script plots arrows directly on the chart to demonstrate directional changes. A green upward arrow suggests a bullish setup, while a red downward arrow suggests a bearish setup.
- Oscillator Projection: Users can toggle a projected view of the acceleration oscillator (either Price or OBV based) at the top or bottom of the chart to visualize momentum cycles without cluttering the main price action.
- Backtest Framework: By enabling the backtest mode, users can simulate trades based on acceleration crossovers, applying custom stop losses and capital management settings to evaluate historical performance.
Details
The script is based on the physical principles of kinematics, specifically the definitions of speed and acceleration. In this context:
- Speed (Velocity): Calculated as the change in distance (price or OBV) over a specific time period (length). Mathematically:
(Source - Source[Length]) / Length. - Acceleration: The rate of change of speed over time. Mathematically:
(Speed - Speed[Length]) / Length.
The indicator utilizes a signal line derived from the difference between the current speed and the current acceleration. When this value crosses zero, it indicates a change in the market's directional force. The inclusion of On Balance Volume (OBV) as a data source allows traders to analyze momentum through volume flow rather than just price movement, offering a secondary perspective on market strength.
Settings
Momentum Acceleration Engine
- Data Source: Selects between 'Price' or 'On Balance Volume' for the primary calculations.
- Acceleration Period: Determines the lookback period for speed and acceleration. Lower values increase sensitivity, while higher values provide smoother signals.
- Bullish/Bearish Color: Customizes the colors of the momentum arrows and shapes.
- Display Length: Controls how many recent bars display the momentum arrows to maintain chart clarity.
Oscillator Projection View
- Show Price/OBV Acceleration: Toggles the visibility of the projected oscillator lines on the chart.
- Scale/Offset: Adjusts the vertical size and position of the projected oscillator relative to the price action.
- Placement: Determines if the oscillator is drawn at the 'Top' or 'Bottom' of the chart area.
Backtest Framework
- Enable Backtest: Activates the simulation of trade entries and exits on the chart.
- Trade Mode: Filters the simulation to 'Long Only', 'Short Only', or 'Both'.
- Reverse on Opposite Signal: When enabled, a new signal in the opposite direction will close the current trade and open a new one.
- Initial Capital: Sets the starting balance for PnL calculations.
- Apply Stop Loss: Enables an automated exit if the price moves against the position by a user-defined percentage.
- Candle Confirmation: Requires the entry bar to be bullish for longs or bearish for shorts before triggering a trade.
FAQ
How do I interpret the arrows on the chart? Green arrows appear when momentum acceleration becomes positive, signaling a potential bullish entry. Red arrows appear when momentum acceleration becomes negative, signaling a potential bearish entry.
What is the "Early Warning" alert? The early warning alert triggers as soon as a crossover is detected on the current (unconfirmed) bar, whereas the "Trading Opportunity" alert triggers after the bar closes to confirm the signal.
