Moving Averages

The Moving Averages 3D indicator visualizes 10 different moving averages using a three-dimensional perspective to help traders identify trend depth and momentum shifts through spatial density.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to interpret market trends. By plotting multiple moving averages across a Z-axis, users can observe the "ribbon" effect to gauge trend strength. When the 3D surface is steep and separated, the trend is considered strong; when the surface flattens or twists, it indicates potential consolidation or a trend reversal.

Customizing Lengths

The tool uses a mathematical progression to determine the length of each of the 10 moving averages.

  • Starting Length: Sets the lookback period for the first (fastest) moving average.
  • Step: Determines the incremental increase for each subsequent average. For example, a Starting Length of 10 and a Step of 5 will create a sequence of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, and 55.

Visualization Settings

The Width setting controls the visual thickness of the 3D projection on the chart. Adjusting this value allows the user to expand or compress the spatial representation, making it easier to see price interactions relative to the ribbon.

Details

The script utilizes the linefill.new() function in Pine Script to create a shaded surface between ten distinct moving average lines. This implementation calculates the position of each average not just in terms of price and time, but with a simulated offset that creates the 3D effect.

The color intensity is dynamic; the script calculates the difference between the moving average values to apply color gradients. Bullish trends utilize green tones (#089981), while bearish trends utilize red tones (#f23645). Brightness levels are automatically adjusted based on the distance between the averages to enhance the depth perception.

Settings

  • Moving Average Type: Choose between Simple Moving Average (SMA) or Exponential Moving Average (EMA).
  • Starting Length: The lookback period for the initial moving average in the set.
  • Step: The number of bars added to the previous length to calculate the next moving average in the sequence.
  • Width: Controls the horizontal spacing and visual thickness of the 3D lines.

FAQ

How do I interpret the colors in the 3D ribbon? The colors shift between green and red based on the relationship between the faster and slower moving averages. Brighter intensities signify a higher rate of change or greater distance between the lengths, indicating stronger momentum.

Does this indicator provide alerts? Yes, the indicator includes built-in alerts for crossovers and crossunders between the fastest moving average (based on the Starting Length) and the slowest moving average (the 10th calculated length).
