Range Identifier
Apr 26, 2015

The Range Identifier indicator highlights price consolidation periods to help traders identify potential breakouts and trend transitions. By visualizing specific price boundaries and an Exponential Moving Average (EMA), the tool provides a clear framework for determining whether the market is ranging or trending.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify market phases. Traders typically use the Range Identifier to spot periods of low volatility where price is "trapped" between established high and low levels.
- Breakout Detection: A primary use case involves monitoring when price closes outside the detected range boundaries. A break above the range during an uptrend (price above EMA) often signals a bullish continuation or entry point.
- Trend Filtering: By utilizing the integrated EMA, the tool helps filter trades based on the prevailing trend. For example, traders may look for long opportunities when price breaks out of a consolidation zone while remaining above the EMA.
- Visual Modes: The script can be toggled to show individual, isolated ranges or a continuous "channel" by enabling the "Connect Ranges" feature. This allows for a more historical view of how support and resistance levels have shifted over time.
Details
The Range Identifier operates by tracking the high and low of a candle and maintaining those levels as a range as long as subsequent closing prices remain within those bounds. If a price close exceeds the previous range high or falls below the previous range low, the script resets and begins identifying a new potential range.
To enhance the visual output, the script employs a specialized filling technique. Since standard fills often only support single colors, this indicator uses a "dummy line" logic to create a dual-color highlight effect. This distinguishes between bullish and bearish sentiment within a consolidation zone relative to the EMA. The midline calculation provides a mean value for the current range, which can serve as a secondary support or resistance level.
Settings
General Settings
- Connect Ranges: When enabled, the indicator connects the high and low plots continuously across the chart. When disabled, it only plots lines during active consolidation periods.
- Show MidLine: Toggles the visibility of the median line of the current range.
- EMA Length: Sets the period for the Exponential Moving Average used for trend filtering.
- Show EMA: Controls the visibility of the EMA line on the chart.
- Highlight Consolidation: Toggles the background fill between the range boundaries.
FAQ
How can I identify a breakout using this tool? A breakout is typically identified when the price closes above the upper gray boundary or below the lower gray boundary of a highlighted consolidation zone.
What do the red and green fills signify? The fills represent the area of consolidation. The dual-color effect is used to show market sentiment within the range relative to the EMA; typically, the green fill represents bullish bias and the red fill represents bearish bias.
