Volume Profile Grid
Aug 17, 2025

The Volume Profile Grid indicator provides a sophisticated volume distribution analysis system that reveals market structure through institutional-grade visual profiles and Point of Control (POC) identification. It utilizes advanced price level segmentation and bullish/bearish volume separation to highlight hidden support and resistance zones based on historical participant behavior.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify key market zones. Traders use this tool to visualize where the most significant trading activity has occurred over a specific timeframe or within the visible chart range.
- Market Structure Identification: By observing the shape of the profile, users can identify "High Volume Nodes" (HVNs) where price often consolidates, and "Low Volume Nodes" (LVNs) which price tends to move through quickly.
- Support & Resistance: The Point of Control (POC) acts as a significant magnet for price, while the Value Area boundaries (VAH and VAL) represent the range where 70% of the volume was traded, often serving as dynamic support or resistance.
- Sentiment Analysis: By enabling bull/bear separation, traders can see whether buying or selling pressure is dominant at specific price levels. "Split" mode allows for a mirrored comparison, while "Stacked" and "Side by Side" modes offer alternative views of volume composition.
- Volume Delta: This feature highlights imbalances where one side of the market is significantly more aggressive, aiding in the identification of potential breakout or reversal points.
Details
The script implements a weighted volume distribution algorithm. Instead of assigning a bar's entire volume to a single price level, the script calculates the intersection ratio of each bar against the grid levels. This ensures that if a volatile candle spans multiple levels, the volume is distributed proportionally across the price spectrum.
For performance optimization, the script utilizes a caching mechanism for range calculations. It supports a "Visible Range" mode that dynamically adjusts the profile as the user scrolls or zooms, and a "Fixed Period" mode for static historical analysis. The Value Area calculation employs a sorting algorithm to identify the narrowest price range containing 70% of the total volume, following institutional standards.
Settings
Lookback Period
- Use Visible Range: When enabled, the profile calculates based on all bars currently visible on the chart.
- Fixed Analysis Period: The number of historical bars to analyze (active only if Visible Range is disabled).
- Max Visible Range Bars: Limits the number of bars processed in visible mode to maintain platform performance.
Bull/Bear Volume
- Show Bull/Bear Volume: Toggles the separation of buying and selling volume.
- Display Mode: Switches between "Split", "Side by Side", and "Stacked" visualization styles.
- Show Volume Delta: Enables visual highlighting of levels with significant volume imbalances.
- Delta Threshold: Sets the percentage imbalance required to trigger a dominance highlight.
Core
- Profile Resolution: Determines the number of horizontal price levels (rows) in the profile.
- Show Value Area: Displays the boundaries containing 70% of the total volume.
- Show POC Line: Displays the Point of Control (the price level with the highest volume).
- Volume Filter (%): Hides price levels with volume below a specific percentage of the maximum volume.
- Extend Lines: Extends the POC and Value Area lines to the right of the chart.
Appearance & Colors
- Profile Width (%): Adjusts the horizontal scale of the profile bars.
- Bar Thickness: Controls the vertical height of the volume lines.
- Mirror Profile: Flips the profile to grow from the right (current price) toward the left.
- Color Inputs: Customizable colors for bullish, bearish, neutral, POC, and Value Area elements.
FAQ
How do I interpret the Point of Control (POC)? The POC is the price level with the highest amount of traded volume for the selected period. It represents the most "accepted" price by market participants and often acts as a major support or resistance level or a target for mean reversion.
What is the Value Area? The Value Area represents the price range where 70% of the total volume took place. It defines the "value" for that period; price trading outside this area is often considered overextended or indicates a strong trending environment.
