Multi Timeframe Moving Average
Jan 25, 2021

The Multi Timeframe Moving Average indicator allows users to plot up to 10 customizable moving averages from different timeframes on a single chart to identify multi-layered trend directions and support/resistance zones.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to monitor multiple trend cycles simultaneously. By overlaying higher timeframe moving averages (MTF) onto a lower timeframe chart, traders can maintain a "big picture" perspective without switching tabs.
- Trend Confluence: Users can enable multiple MAs (e.g., Daily, 4H, and 1H) to see where different trends align. When multiple MTF averages cluster together, it often signifies a strong area of institutional interest.
- Smoothing Modes: The script features a "MTF Smoothed Mode." When enabled, the higher timeframe values are interpolated to create smooth transitions between bars. When disabled, the values are displayed as "step lines," showing the precise value of the higher timeframe at each point in time.
- Visual Organization: The indicator includes customizable labels that can display the MA type, length, and timeframe directly on the chart, helping users distinguish between the 10 possible active lines.
Details
The script is designed to be highly versatile, supporting 13 different moving average calculations. These include standard types like Simple (SMA) and Exponential (EMA), as well as more advanced calculations like Double Exponential (DEMA), Triple Exponential (TEMA), Hull (HMA), and Volume Weighted Moving Average (VWMA).
Implementation details include:
- MTF Logic: Uses the
request.securityfunction with a smoothing toggle to handle data from different intervals. - Visibility Control: A specific setting allows users to automatically hide moving averages when the chart timeframe is higher than the indicator timeframe, preventing redundant or misleading data.
- Extended MA Types: Includes specialized functions for MVWAP (Moving VWAP), SMMA (Smoothed Moving Average), and LSMA (Least Squares Moving Average) to provide a comprehensive toolkit for technical analysis.
Settings
General Settings
- Hide MA from lower timeframe: When checked, an MA will only appear if the chart timeframe is equal to or lower than the MA’s timeframe.
- MTF Smoothed Mode: Toggles between smoothed curves and step-style lines for higher timeframe data.
MA Labels
- Display MA Type/Length/Timeframe/Number: Toggles for various metadata to be displayed next to the lines.
- Label Offset: Adjusts the horizontal position of the labels.
- Label Size: Sets the font size of the on-chart labels.
Moving Average #1-10
- Enabled: Toggles the individual moving average on or off.
- Timeframe: Sets the data source interval for the calculation.
- Source: Defines the price point used (Close, Open, HL2, etc.).
- Length: The lookback period for the calculation.
- Offset: Shifts the plot forward or backward in time.
- Type: Selects from 13 different calculation methods (SMA, EMA, HMA, etc.).
- Color: Customizes the line color for that specific MA.
FAQ
How do I use this to see Daily averages on a 15-minute chart?
In the settings for any "Moving Average" block, set the "Timeframe" dropdown to "1D". The indicator will then calculate that specific MA using Daily data and plot it across your 15-minute bars.
Why are some lines showing as steps instead of smooth curves?
This is controlled by the "MTF Smoothed Mode" setting. Disable this if you want to see the exact price value of the higher timeframe as it was at that moment, or enable it for a more fluid visual appearance.
