The Moving Average Slope indicator calculates the angular velocity of a moving average to differentiate between trending and ranging market conditions. By quantifying the steepness of price action, it provides a systematic filter to identify high-momentum trends and avoid sideways price movement.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used, examples should be provided in this section. This section also focuses on how main settings affect the indicator interpretation and output.

The primary application of this tool is as a trend filter. Traders can use the slope value to confirm the strength of a move before entering a trade.

  • Trend Identification: When the indicator line is above the "Filter Top" level, it signifies a strong bullish trend. Conversely, when the line is below the "Filter Bottom" level, it signifies a strong bearish trend.
  • Ranging Markets: If the slope value oscillates between the top and bottom filters, the market is considered to be in a ranging or consolidation phase, suggesting that trend-following strategies may be less effective.
  • Crossovers: A cross above the top filter or below the bottom filter can be used as a signal that a trend is gaining sufficient momentum to be traded.

Details

The script calculates the slope by measuring the change in an Exponential Moving Average (EMA) relative to the Average True Range (ATR). This methodology, originally conceptualized by KyJ and adapted from "Trend Angle BF" by bennef, converts price change into degrees using an arctangent function.

By normalizing the price change against the ATR, the indicator ensures that the slope measurement remains consistent across different assets and timeframes, regardless of the absolute price value or volatility levels. The core logic relies on identifying when the rate of change of the MA exceeds a specific angular threshold, effectively acting as a volatility-adjusted momentum oscillator.

Settings

  • Filter Top: Sets the upper threshold for the slope. Values above this level indicate a significant upward trend.
  • Filter Bottom: Sets the lower threshold for the slope. Values below this level indicate a significant downward trend.
  • Source: Determines the price data used for the Moving Average calculation (e.g., Close, HL2, OHLC4).
  • MA Length: Defines the lookback period for the Exponential Moving Average used to calculate the slope. Higher values result in a smoother, slower-reacting slope.

FAQ

How do I interpret the colors of the slope line? The line changes color based on its position relative to the filters: green indicates a bullish trend above the top filter, red indicates a bearish trend below the bottom filter, and blue indicates a neutral or ranging state between the filters.

Can I use this indicator on any timeframe? Yes, because the slope is normalized using the ATR, the indicator adapts to the volatility of the specific timeframe being charted.
