The Momentum Weighted Bands | NAL indicator provides an adaptive trend-following framework by dynamically adjusting volatility bands based on real-time momentum conditions. It aims to filter market noise and identify directional expansions by tightening or loosening its range according to the strength of price velocity.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify trend transitions and volatility shifts. Traders can use the bands to determine if the price is entering a new trend regime or remains within a mean-reverting range.

  • Bullish Expansion: A bullish state is triggered when the price closes above the upper band. This indicates that momentum is sufficiently strong to push price beyond its volatility-adjusted range.
  • Bearish Expansion: A bearish state is triggered when the price closes below the lower band, suggesting a downward trend expansion.
  • Neutral/Consolidation: When the price moves within the bands, it indicates a lack of confirmed directional momentum, and the trend state remains unchanged from the previous signal.

The indicator includes a "Color Mode" setting to adjust the visual output across different themes, and it highlights candles based on the current trend state to simplify chart interpretation.

Details

The script functions by calculating a momentum residual, which is the difference between an RSI and its Exponential Moving Average (EMA). This residual represents whether current momentum is accelerating or decelerating relative to its own average.

The core logic utilizes a percent rank of this residual over a user-defined lookback period. This ranking determines the band multiplier: if the momentum residual is high compared to history, the multiplier increases toward the "Max Multiple," widening the bands. If the residual is low, the multiplier shifts toward the "Min Multiple," tightening the bands.

The final bands are calculated by applying this dynamic multiplier to the standard deviation of an EMA baseline. This creates a volatility envelope that is uniquely sensitive to the momentum environment rather than just price volatility alone.

Settings

  • Color Mode: Switches the visual palette of the indicator (Standard, Nordic, Simple).
  • Momentum Length: Sets the period for the internal RSI calculation used to drive the momentum engine.
  • Momentum Rank Lookback: Determines the number of bars used to calculate the percentage rank of the momentum residual.
  • EMA Base Length: Sets the period for the central EMA baseline.
  • Volatility Length: Sets the lookback period for the standard deviation calculation.
  • Max Multiple: Defines the maximum standard deviation multiplier applied when momentum is at its peak.
  • Min Multiple: Defines the minimum standard deviation multiplier applied when momentum is at its lowest.
  • Source: Determines the price data used for all calculations (default is Close).

FAQ

How do I interpret the widening and narrowing of the bands? Widening bands indicate that momentum is increasing relative to its recent history, requiring a larger price move to confirm a trend break. Narrowing bands suggest momentum is waning or stabilizing, making the indicator more sensitive to price breakouts.

What is the difference between this and standard Bollinger Bands? While Bollinger Bands use a fixed multiplier (usually 2.0), this tool dynamically adjusts the multiplier between a minimum and maximum range based on RSI-derived momentum rankings.
