The Periodic Volume Profile indicator renders high-resolution volume profiles by analyzing intra-bar data anchored to user-defined timeframes (e.g., Session, Day, Week) to reveal where value is established over cyclical periods. It provides a precise view of market activity by distributing volume across price levels using statistical models rather than simple tick counts.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to analyze volume distribution across specific time intervals. Traders can use this tool to identify key support and resistance zones through the Point of Control (POC) and Value Area (VA) metrics.

Profile Construction

The indicator builds profiles using a lower "Intra-Bar Timeframe" for high resolution. It employs a statistical engine to distribute volume across price levels.

  • Allotment: Users can choose between a "Classic" close-based assignment or a "PDF" model that distributes volume proportionally based on price density within the candle.
  • Volume Split: Volume is classified as Buy or Sell using either a "Classic" candle color method or a "Dynamic" model that accounts for trend and wick data.

Visualization Modes

The finalized profile, displayed at the end of each period, can be viewed in three styles:

  • Up/Down: Displays separate bars for buy and sell volume.
  • Total: Displays the combined total volume at each price level.
  • Delta: Displays the net difference between buying and selling pressure.

Details

The script executes by aggregating intra-bar data into a profile structure. Unlike standard fixed-interval profiles, this tool focuses on periodicity (like daily or weekly cycles) to find consensus in value. It calculates the Point of Control (the price level with the highest volume) and the Value Area (the range where a specified percentage of volume occurred) in real-time.

Developing Metrics: The indicator plots the developing POC, VA High/Low, VWAP, and Standard Deviation bands as the period unfolds. This allows users to see how value shifts dynamically before the period closes.

Real-Time Behavior: Because the script utilizes intra-bar data, values on the current unclosed bar will update dynamically as new data arrives. Signals are considered final only after the main chart bar has closed.

Settings

Timeframe Settings

  • Use custom Intra-Bar Timeframe: Enables manual selection of the lower timeframe used for profile resolution.
  • Intra-Bar Timeframe: The specific lower timeframe for volume calculation.
  • Use custom Anchor Timeframe: Enables manual selection of the period (e.g., Daily, Weekly) used to anchor the profile.
  • Anchor Timeframe: The periodicity that defines when a new profile starts and the old one ends.

Volume Profile Settings

  • Logarithmic Profile: Calculates the profile grid and statistical density in log-space for better resolution on large price ranges.
  • Rows per Percent: When enabled, automatically adjusts bin density based on price movement; when disabled, uses a fixed count.
  • Profile Rows: The number of price levels (bins) displayed in the final profile.
  • Rows per Bar: The resolution used for the underlying intra-bar calculation.
  • Value Area: The percentage of total volume (typically 70%) used to calculate the Value Area range.
  • Allot model: Choose between "Classic" (Close-based) or "PDF" (Statistical distribution).
  • Volume Estimator: Method for splitting Buy/Sell volume ("Classic" or "Dynamic").
  • Trend Length: The lookback period used for the "Dynamic" volume split model.

Display Settings

  • Style: Selects the visual output (Up/Down, Total, or Delta).
  • Width (% of the box): Controls the horizontal scale of the profile histogram.
  • Display: Aligns the profile to the Left or Right side of the period.
  • Colors: Customizable colors for Buy and Sell volume components.

FAQ

How do I use this indicator for intraday trading? You can set the "Anchor Timeframe" to "Daily" and the "Intra-Bar Timeframe" to "1 minute" to see how volume develops throughout the trading session, helping you identify high-volume nodes and value areas for that day.

Why does the profile look different on the current bar? The indicator uses real-time intra-bar data. As new trades occur within the current bar, the profile and developing levels (like POC and VWAP) will update dynamically until the bar closes.
