Bollinger Bands with Multiple Moving Averages
Aug 28, 2019

The Bollinger Bands with Multiple Moving Averages indicator combines volatility-based bands with a triple moving average system to provide a comprehensive framework for trend identification and momentum breakouts.
Usage
The indicator is designed to help traders visualize market trends across multiple time horizons while simultaneously monitoring volatility. By overlaying a fast, medium, and slow moving average atop Bollinger Bands, users can identify trend alignment and potential exhaustion points.
- Trend Analysis: Use the three moving averages (defaulted to 13, 62, and 200 periods) to determine the primary and secondary trend directions. When the Fast MA is above the Medium and Slow MAs, it indicates a bullish structure.
- Volatility Monitoring: The Bollinger Bands expand and contract based on market volatility. Prices touching or exceeding the bands may indicate overextended conditions.
- Breakout Signals: The indicator plots "Buy" and "Sell" labels based on specific momentum conditions. A "Buy" signal occurs when the Fast MA crosses above the Bollinger Band basis line while the price remains above the basis. Conversely, a "Sell" signal occurs when the Fast MA crosses below the basis line while the price is below the basis.
Details
The script integrates two classic technical analysis tools into a single overlay to reduce chart clutter. It allows for high levels of customization, specifically regarding the calculation methods used for the moving averages.
The breakout logic is built on the interaction between short-term momentum (Fast MA) and the medium-term mean (Bollinger Basis). By requiring the price to be on the same side of the basis as the crossover, the script filters out some noise, ensuring that the signal aligns with the current price action. Users can choose between Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) and Simple Moving Averages (SMA) independently for both the triple MA set and the Bollinger Band calculation.

FAQ
How do I interpret the Buy and Sell signals? The signals indicate a momentum shift where the short-term trend (Fast MA) moves across the mean (BB Basis). A Buy signal suggests upward momentum is accelerating, while a Sell signal suggests downward momentum is increasing.
Can I use different types of moving averages for the bands and the overlay? Yes, the settings allow you to define the Moving Average Type for the triple overlay separately from the BB Moving Average Type.
