The Periodic Volume Profile indicator provides a customizable volume profile analysis that aligns with user-defined higher timeframe periods rather than fixed bar counts. It allows traders to visualize volume distribution, identify key liquidity zones, and track Point of Control (POC) and Value Area (VA) levels across specific time cycles.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify high-interest price levels and support/resistance zones.

  • Period Alignment: Unlike standard built-in profiles that may use fixed bar counts, this tool aligns profiles with actual timeframes (e.g., 30-minute, daily, or weekly cycles). This ensures the volume data reflects complete market sessions.
  • Support & Resistance: High volume nodes (Point of Control) indicate price levels with significant interest, often acting as magnets or barriers.
  • POC Extensions: Users can extend the POC line until it is touched or crossed by price action. This is useful for identifying "Naked POCs" which often serve as future price targets or reversal points.
  • Value Area Analysis: The indicator highlights the range where a specific percentage (default 68%) of volume was traded, helping traders distinguish between "value" and "excess" price action.

Details

The script calculates volume distribution by dividing the price range of a specific period into a user-defined number of rows. It then aggregates volume for each price level within that period.

Key implementation details include:

  • Session Reset: An option is available to reset profiles specifically on regular session starts, which is particularly useful for assets with extended trading hours.
  • Signal Generation: The script identifies POC touches and crosses, marking them with visual symbols (triangles and crosses) to signal potential liquidity tests.
  • Developing Levels: The tool can plot the real-time progression of the POC and Value Area boundaries as they evolve throughout the current period.

Settings

Periodic Volume Profile

  • Periodic Timeframe: Determines the duration for each individual volume profile (e.g., "30", "D", "W").
  • Profile resets on Regular Session: When enabled, resets the calculation at the start of the regular trading session for tickers with extended hours.
  • Volume Profile (Common Interest): Toggles the visibility of the volume histogram.
  • Value Area Volume %: Sets the percentage of total volume used to calculate the Value Area (default 68%).
  • Number of Rows: Defines the vertical granularity of the profile (number of price bins).
  • Placement: Controls where the profile is drawn relative to the period (Left, Right, or Next Period).
  • Point of Control (PoC): Toggles the visibility of the POC line and allows for color/width customization.
  • Extend Point of Control (PoC): Determines the termination criteria for POC lines (Until Bar Touch, Until Last Bar, Until Bar Cross, or None).
  • Value Area High/Low: Toggles the visibility of the VAH and VAL levels.
  • Show POC Crosses/Touches: Enables visual markers and alerts when price interacts with a POC level.
  • Show Developing Profile: Enables the plotting of live, evolving POC/VAH/VAL paths during the current period.

FAQ

How does this differ from the built-in Periodic Volume Profile? The primary difference is the alignment method. This script aligns with standard timeframe periods (like a 1-hour or daily candle) whereas some built-in tools determine periods based on a specific number of bars, which can lead to misalignment on different chart views.

Why are only a limited number of profiles displayed? Trading platforms have technical limitations on the number of graphical objects (boxes and lines) that a single script can render. The script optimizes these to show the most recent periods within those constraints.
