Ultimate Moving Average-Multi-TimeFrame-7 MA Types
Apr 28, 2014

The Ultimate Moving Average-Multi-TimeFrame-7 MA Types indicator provides a comprehensive toolkit for plotting seven different moving average types across customizable timeframes with integrated trend coloring and crossover detection.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify trends and potential reversal points. Users can select from SMA, EMA, WMA, Hull MA, VWMA, RMA, or TEMA to suit their specific strategy needs.
- Trend Identification: By enabling the directional color change feature, the indicator highlights bullish and bearish momentum. The smoothing parameter allows users to filter out minor price fluctuations, ensuring the color change only occurs when a sustained directional shift is detected.
- Multi-Timeframe Analysis: The indicator can project moving averages from higher timeframes (e.g., Daily or Weekly) onto a lower timeframe chart (e.g., 15-minute or 1-hour). This helps traders stay aligned with the primary trend while managing entries on shorter intervals.
- Crossover Strategies: By enabling the optional second moving average, users can visualize "Golden Cross" or "Death Cross" scenarios. The tool includes a specific visual marker (dots) that appear when the two selected moving averages intersect.
Details
The script consolidates multiple calculation methods into a single interface. It utilizes the request.security function to fetch data from different resolutions, allowing for seamless multi-timeframe integration.
The calculation for the Hull Moving Average (HMA) uses a weighted moving average of the difference between two other WMAs to reduce lag while maintaining smoothness. The Triple Exponential Moving Average (TEMA) is implemented using a triple-calculation formula to provide a faster response to price changes than a standard EMA.
Directional coloring is determined by comparing the current moving average value to a previous value defined by the "Color Smoothing" lookback. This prevents frequent color flickering in sideways markets.
Settings
- Source: Determines the price data used for the calculation (e.g., Close, Open, HL2).
- Use Current Chart Resolution?: When checked, the indicator uses the timeframe currently active on the chart.
- Use Different Timeframe?: Specifies a custom timeframe for the moving average calculation if the current resolution box is unchecked.
- Moving Average Length: The lookback period for the primary moving average.
- MA Type (1-7): Selects the mathematical model (1=SMA, 2=EMA, 3=WMA, 4=HullMA, 5=VWMA, 6=RMA, 7=TEMA).
- Change Color Based On Direction?: Toggles the gradient/color shift based on whether the MA is rising or falling.
- Color Smoothing: Sets the lookback distance to determine a change in direction, helping to filter out market noise.
- Optional 2nd Moving Average: Enables a secondary moving average line for crossover analysis.
- Moving Average Length - Optional 2nd MA: The lookback period for the secondary moving average.
- MA Type 2nd MA (1-7): Selects the calculation model for the secondary moving average.
- Change Color Based On Direction 2nd MA?: Enables directional coloring for the secondary line.
- Show Dots on Cross of Both MA's: Toggles visual markers at the intersection points of the two moving averages.
FAQ
How do I change the timeframe of the moving average? Uncheck the "Use Current Chart Resolution" box in the settings and select your desired timeframe from the "Use Different Timeframe" dropdown menu.
What is the "Color Smoothing" setting used for? It determines how many bars back the script looks to decide if the trend has changed. A higher value requires a more significant move to change the indicator's color, reducing false signals in ranging markets.
