Moving Averages

The Moving Average Channel tool provides a long-term cyclical framework for Bitcoin by identifying extreme price deviations using a simple moving average and a multiplier-based upper band.

Usage

The Moving Average Channel is designed primarily for long-term Bitcoin analysis on logarithmic weekly charts. It identifies market cycles by highlighting periods of extreme pessimism (undervaluation) and extreme optimism (overvaluation).

  • Accumulation Zone: When the price drops below the lower green line (the Simple Moving Average), it historically indicates a period of market contraction and a potential long-term buying opportunity.
  • Profit-Taking Zone: When the price exceeds the upper red line (the SMA multiplied by a specific factor), it suggests the market is over-extended, signaling a potential peak or profit-taking opportunity.
  • Signal Labels: The indicator can display "Buy" and "Sell" labels when the price crosses back into the channel from these extreme zones, helping to time entries and exits after a period of over-extension.

Details

The script is based on concepts originally developed by Philip Swift. It utilizes a long-term Simple Moving Average (SMA), typically set to 144 weeks (approximately 2.75 years), to establish a baseline for Bitcoin's growth curve. Because Bitcoin's price discovery occurs on a logarithmic scale, this tool is most effective when viewed on logarithmic charts.

The upper boundary is calculated by applying a multiplier to the SMA. This creates a channel that encompasses the majority of price action, with the boundaries only being breached during the terminal phases of bull or bear market cycles. The script also includes a calculation for the 104-week (2-year) SMA, which is another common benchmark for multi-year trend analysis.

Settings

  • Weeks: Determines the lookback period for the Simple Moving Average. Default is 144 weeks.
  • Multiplier: The factor by which the SMA is multiplied to create the upper channel boundary.
  • Show Buy/Sell: A toggle to enable or disable the visual labels on the chart when price crosses the channel boundaries.
