The Arnaud Legoux Moving Average Bands MTF V3 indicator provides a multi-layered volatility envelope based on the Arnaud Legoux Moving Average (ALMA) to identify trend direction, potential reversal zones, and multi-timeframe support or resistance.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to analyze market volatility and trend exhaustion. Traders can use the various bands as dynamic price targets or exit points.

  • Trend Identification: The central ALMA line serves as the primary trend filter; price holding above the line suggests a bullish bias, while price below suggests a bearish bias.
  • Volatility Envelopes: The indicator plots three levels of bands above and below the baseline. The inner bands often act as initial price targets, while the outer "X" bands (StopLoss levels) indicate extreme volatility or potential exhaustion points.
  • Multi-Timeframe (MTF) Analysis: By utilizing the "Pick TimeFrame" setting, users can overlay higher timeframe ALMA bands onto their current chart to identify institutional-level supply and demand zones.
  • Alerts: The script includes built-in alerts for price crossings of the MTF bands, allowing for automated monitoring of significant breakouts or mean-reversion opportunities.

Details

The ALMA (Arnaud Legoux Moving Average) is designed to reduce lag while maintaining smoothness, compared to traditional moving averages like the SMA or EMA. This script enhances the ALMA by applying Average True Range (ATR) based offsets to create a series of bands.

The calculation uses a Gaussian distribution regulated by the "Offset" (which controls the smoothness and responsiveness) and "Sigma" (which controls the weight distribution). By combining this high-fidelity baseline with ATR multipliers, the script creates a structured environment for measuring price deviation. The MTF component utilizes the request.security function to fetch these calculations from a user-defined timeframe, providing a macro perspective on a micro chart.

Settings

  • Window Size: Determines the lookback period for the ALMA calculation.
  • Offset: Adjusts the smoothness and lag of the ALMA. A value closer to 1 increases responsiveness, while a value closer to 0 increases smoothness.
  • Sigma: Defines the shape of the Gaussian filter. A higher value makes the moving average more focused on the center of the window.
  • Pick TimeFrame: Allows the user to select the timeframe from which the MTF bands are calculated (e.g., 240 for 4-hour bands).
  • ATR Length: The period used to calculate the Average True Range for band spacing.
  • ATR Mult: The multiplier for the first set of inner bands.
  • ATR Mult2: The multiplier for the second set of bands (High/Low).
  • ATR Mult3: The multiplier for the third set of outer bands (StopLoss levels).

FAQ

How does ALMA differ from a standard EMA? The ALMA uses a Gaussian distribution and adjustable offset to provide a smoother line with significantly less lag than a standard EMA, making it more effective for identifying trends in volatile markets.

Can I use this for scalping? Yes, by setting the "Pick TimeFrame" to a higher timeframe than your current chart, you can identify major levels of resistance and support to guide short-term scalp trades.
