The Trend Ribbon indicator provides a visual representation of trend direction and momentum strength by analyzing the relationship between a fast and slow exponential moving average (EMA).

Usage

The Trend Ribbon is used to identify the prevailing market bias and determine if a trend is accelerating or exhausting. Traders can interpret the ribbon through its directional orientation and color intensity.

  • Directional Bias: When the fast EMA is above the slow EMA, the ribbon identifies a bullish trend. Conversely, when the fast EMA is below the slow EMA, a bearish trend is identified.
  • Momentum Strength: The ribbon utilizes dynamic color fading to signal changes in short-term momentum. A bright, strong color indicates that the fast EMA is moving in the direction of the trend (e.g., rising during a bullish trend). A faded or weaker color suggests that the fast EMA has begun to stall or pull back, providing a visual warning of potential trend exhaustion or a retracement.
  • Trend Reversals: Crossovers between the fast and slow EMA lines indicate potential trend shifts. These points are often used to signal the beginning of a new directional move.

Details

The script calculates two Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs) based on user-defined lengths. The "ribbon" effect is created by filling the space between these two averages.

The logic for the visual output is divided into four primary states:

  1. Strong Bullish: Fast EMA is above the Slow EMA and the Fast EMA is currently rising.
  2. Fading Bullish: Fast EMA is above the Slow EMA but the Fast EMA has started to fall.
  3. Strong Bearish: Fast EMA is below the Slow EMA and the Fast EMA is currently falling.
  4. Fading Bearish: Fast EMA is below the Slow EMA but the Fast EMA has started to rise.

By monitoring the slope of the fast EMA relative to the trend direction, the indicator helps prevent late entries into exhausted moves and assists in identifying high-probability trend-following opportunities.

Settings

Ribbon Settings

  • Fast EMA Length: Sets the period for the short-term exponential moving average (default is 9).
  • Slow EMA Length: Sets the period for the long-term exponential moving average (default is 21).

Visuals

  • Strong Bullish: Determines the color and transparency for the ribbon during active upward momentum.
  • Fading Bullish: Determines the color and transparency for the ribbon when upward momentum slows.
  • Strong Bearish: Determines the color and transparency for the ribbon during active downward momentum.
  • Fading Bearish: Determines the color and transparency for the ribbon when downward momentum slows.

FAQ

How do I interpret a color change in the ribbon? A shift from a strong color to a faded color indicates that the short-term EMA is moving against the primary trend direction, signaling a loss of momentum. This can be used to manage exits or avoid entering trades during a consolidation phase.

What are the default EMA lengths? The indicator defaults to a 9-period Fast EMA and a 21-period Slow EMA, which are standard settings for capturing short-to-medium-term trend shifts.
