The Volatility Gated Supertrend indicator provides a regime-aware trend-following system that utilizes a volatility filter to block trend reversals during low-volatility conditions. It aims to reduce false signals and whipsaws commonly found in traditional Supertrend models during market consolidation while maintaining responsiveness during trending environments.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used, particularly in identifying directional shifts confirmed by market energy. The indicator functions as a primary trend filter or trailing stop mechanism.

Trend Identification

The indicator colors the chart based on the current market regime. A bullish regime is established when price closes above the upper trailing band during an expansionary volatility phase, while a bearish regime is established when price closes below the lower trailing band under similar conditions.

Volatility Gating

A unique feature of this tool is the gating mechanism. If a price crossover occurs while the "Gate" is closed (meaning current volatility is low relative to the baseline), the trend state remains unchanged. This is visually represented by "X" markers (blocked signals) and dimmed colors on the bands and candles, signaling that the current move lacks sufficient energy to justify a trend reversal.

Signal Interpretation

  • Bullish Signal (▲): Occurs when price crosses the upper band and the volatility ratio is above the user-defined threshold.
  • Bearish Signal (▼): Occurs when price crosses the lower band and the volatility ratio is above the user-defined threshold.
  • Blocked Signal (X): Indicates a price crossover that was rejected because volatility was too low, suggesting a potential fakeout or range-bound chop.

Details

The indicator is constructed using two primary components: a Supertrend engine and an ATR Ratio filter.

The Supertrend engine uses the hl2 (Median Price) as its source and calculates trailing bands based on a multiplier of the Average True Range (ATR). The gating logic is derived from the ratio of a Fast ATR (measuring current short-term volatility) to a Slow ATR (measuring long-term baseline volatility). When the ratio falls below the Gate Threshold, the "gate" closes, preventing the trend state from updating even if price crosses a band. This ensures that transitions only occur when volatility is expanding, which typically correlates with higher-quality trend shifts.

Settings

Supertrend

  • ATR Multiplier: Controls the distance of the bands from the price. Higher values result in wider bands and fewer trend flips.
  • ATR Length: Sets the lookback period for the volatility used to calculate the band width.

Volatility Gate

  • Volatility Gate: Enables or disables the gating mechanism.
  • Fast ATR: Sets the period for short-term volatility measurement.
  • Slow ATR: Sets the period for the long-term baseline volatility.
  • Gate Threshold: Defines the required ratio between Fast and Slow ATR to allow a trend flip. Higher values require more significant volatility expansion.

UI Settings

  • Show Signals: Toggles the visibility of bullish and bearish entry markers.
  • Trend Fill: Enables the colored background between the price and the trailing band.
  • Show Gate Status: Dims the indicator visuals when the volatility gate is closed.
  • Color Candles: Applies trend-based coloring to the price bars.
  • Colors (Bullish, Bearish, Gated): Customizes the color scheme for each market state.

FAQ

How do I interpret the "Gated" status on my chart? When the indicator appears dimmed or "Gated," it means volatility is currently compressed. During this time, the script will ignore any price crosses of the trailing bands to prevent entering a trade during choppy, sideways price action.

What is the benefit of using an ATR Ratio instead of a standard ATR? The ATR Ratio is adaptive. Instead of looking for a fixed volatility value, it compares current activity to the recent historical average. This allows the indicator to adjust to different market environments and timeframes automatically.
